Real Christmas Trees, OK?

I have heard that having a real Christmas Tree can cause problems for CF kids. I dont know if it is allergy based, or if it affects the respiratory system in all of them. We have always purchased a real tree in the past, but now that our son has been diagnosed we are considering a fake one. Please let me know if anyone has any thoughts.

I would imagine it depends on the CFer & allergies. I am 37, dx at 7 & for most of those years had a live Christmas tree. A few years during my childhood & currently with my husband we use artificial, but thats more for convenience then health issues.

I have a severe allergy to pine pollen and "real" trees are horrible and really impact my ability to breath and sleep at night! I was sooo glad when I moved out of my parents and never had to live 24/7 with a real tree again! My husband, daughter and I put up a beautiful artificial tree each year...looks great! If your child has problems with tree pollens, I would recommend against having the live tree. Just my two cents! Happy Holidays!

I think it only really depends on allergies, not the CF. I have no allergies and we have always had a real Christmas tree in my house... every year. If your kid is allergy-free, I'd say get a real one, because the smell is so lovely. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

As long as your child isn't allergic to pine trees, a real tree is fine. For years we had a fake tree, and my parents gave my CF as an excuse. It turns out they just didn't like getting the pine needles all over the place and such. (we have gotten real trees for the last several years.)
