Really bad leg cramps!!! HELP!

So I have been having these horrible charlie horses in my upper calf area and underneath my foot. They come and go and ALWAYS happen at night. I used to get them every once in a while, then I would eat a banana and be ok for like a year...lol. For about the past six weeks maybe, I have been getting them 4 or more times a week. Its like the kind of pain that you wake up at night and it just stiffens your muscles...then goes away. Sometimes it hurts when you wake up in the AM and sometimes not. I got two last night...one in each leg!

Now I know that the cause of this could be I believe Potassium/Calcium deficiency. I drink tons and tons of milk, so I dont believe that its calcium and I have tried to eat bananas, which I dont like, but I have been doing anyway. None of this has helped. I started up with extra Vitamin B2 recently, but it was before that, that the cramps started. It could also be b/c I am on my feet all day and I am not used to doing that (?)...possibly. I researched it, but I dont really know what to do...everything is so different for a CFer and I dont want to do anything to 'cure' these cramps that might not be a good idea. So I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they were advised to do to fix it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

"Normally" (very often) its a lack of magnesium. Maybe you should do a blood test or you just start to take magnesium tablets.

Yeah it's a magnesium deficiency. I've had what you've described.. and they're a pain in the butt and have been able to bring me out of a full deep sleep. Banana's have magnesium in them which is what's helping it. I'd go to your doc and ask for your levels to be tested that way you're not over medicating on magnesium if you do decide to take mag. pills. If you don't want to go the pill route here's a list of foods that are high in magnesium http://www.ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/magnesium.asp

I know exactly what you are talking about I get these 'attacks' all the time, sometimes effecting my entire body, very painful. I had mentioned it to my doctor it can be your electrolytes levels to low, or breathing to fast can cause these too.

Are you diabetic by any chance ? I remember one of my symptoms before being diagnosed with diabetes was leg / foot/ toe cramps. They hurt like nuts !! I also get them every here and there now a days when i wear heels. Since i normally wear sneakers all the time.... when i wear heels , i certainly pay for it .
