I forgot to ask a question on my last post.Does anyone's children with CF ever get REALLY tired. The school nurse called today and said that Courtney could hardly stay awake during class. She got plenty of sleep last night. She says that when it happens she can barely keep her eyes open. I picked her up from school about 3 and 1/2 hours ago and she has been sound asleep since. This seems to happen about once a month. Is this normal???Seana

Has he sugar ever been checked? If she her sugars are too high like maybe after a high carb meal she would feel like that!

If she coughs during the night that might be preventing her from getting into a nice deep sleep.
Or even if she just had a bad night.
If it's a constant thing then I'd start to worry a bit [I was that way all throughout high school, coughing all the time at night just not getting enough rest even though I'd go to bed early], but if it's only once a month I wouldn't really worry all that much. Just keep an ear out, if she coughs alot during the night and she's asleep on her feet the next day it's probably because she didn't get enough rest. I've been through several nights where I just cough so much, or even a little that I only drift into a light sleep so almost anything can wake me up.

Hello,
My daughter gets the same way and sleeps like 4 hours. Not sure why but she also gets very mean and does not listen well at all prior. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all of the responses!Courtney just had blood workup last month and all was fine. She has never had a glucose test though, you know the one where they make you drink that orange crud over and over. I should probably request it.She does not cough at all at night. She sleeps very well through the night.I am very worried though. She was asleep on the loveseat. I had to switch out phones and the jack is right behing the loveseat. I stood on the loveseat with my feet right next to her head. Her head was bobbing all around and she did not wake up. I could not reach the jack so I pulled the sofa away from the wall......still she did not wake up. Finally I tried to wake her because she is suppose to go to her dad's house tonight. It took me five times to finally get her to sit up. When I dropped her at her dad's she was very lethargic. This makes me VERY nervous!Seana

When Kayla is like that I have to just let her sleep- there are times that she will sleep from 6:00 at night until the next morning just because she is so tired from coughing. I to have a daughter namesdCourtney she is 7 and she has Asthma and takes Singulair every day as well as Albuterol but she will get the same way. Also it may be because she is not felling well and if she has a split home life that may be taking a toll on her as well. I have 2 older children that im divorced from there dad and it seems that dads just done take care of kids as well as moms and they also come home from there dads over the weekend and are just so tired they dont want to do anything and they are 16 & 13.

Hang in there-

My four year old cf-er gets really tired when she has chest infections (some from coughing, some just from the infection in general). Is your daughter growing anything at the moment that may be making her extra tired?

Since she just had blood work, did she have a hemoglobin A1C. That will give you her blood sugar average. The other thing you can do is actually test her blood sugar when she is feeling this way with a home kit. Let us know how things go. Jason only gets that way when he is starting to get sick. It is usually our first sign. Hope she is feeling better soon. Jo Ann, mom of Jason -7 and Tommy - 10

If you do the glucose test and everything else and all checks out fine. I have a theory on this, because it happens to me too. My thought is, I can go and go and keep up with the average person sleeping about 8 hrs a night and working form 8-5 etc. But then like once a month I just crash. I literally call in sick form work to sleep. Our bodies just work harder even when we're at our best and I think that the fatigue catches up with us and at some point if we don't put oursleves on the sidelines to rest, our bodies do it for us, even if it's in the middle of Algebra or at your desk at work.

so definitely make sure she's not starting to get sick or having trouble with her blood sugars, but other than that you might just have to kind of start to expect her to need a day to catch up once in a while.

I do this on Saturdays usually. Getting up early every morning & going all week takes a toll by Saturday so we try to take family naps on Saturdays. We all seem to need that extra time to recoup & then we are good. It also seems to limit my daughter (non CF) & I from getting sick. I guess because we arent getting too worn down!

could she be depressed? sometimes people who have depression just sleep when they feel overly stressed. It is easy to be stressed when you are young. I would talk to her and find out how she feels about different issues.

I was feeling really tired and slept all the time. I would wake up do treaments then go back to sleep until my mom would wake me up to do treaments or eat. I new something was wrong. I had no energy. I have been hospitalized a few times this year also. I was CF sick so I came into the hospital and they noticed how much I slept. They had me meet with a health Physcology because they thought I was depressed. I met with them and they said I did not have depression. Then they checked my iorn levels and it turns out that I am animic(sp?). They think that I've been like that for a few months and that is why I was hospitalized so often within a few months. I didn't have enough iorn to fully ever get better. I am so glad. I am just taking iorn pills and slowly feeling the difference.

Seana, ditto what has been mentioned before glucose, iorn levels, also get her 02 levels checked at night if you think that might be an issue. It requires an overnight stay at the hospital.

Also, has she started her period yet (can't recall how hold she is???). My period always causes me to be tired, but the complete exhaustion occures 3-7 days before my period. Could be something there too?

Okay....i have to make this short.......have to pick up kids from track and cheerleading.Talked to Courtney's doc. He asked us to take her blood sugar 3 times a day. So far so good. She is even pricking her own finger! I am proud of her for that.No new episodes of the tiredness.Thank you all so much for your input. I will keep you all up to date.Seana

I am the same way as Mellissa, I have to have at least 12 hours of sleep on one day of the weekend or I just get exhausted and eventually will get sick. So maybe that is how your daughter is? They say CFrs use a lot of energy just breathing.
