Hi,

I have a 9yr w/cf and I have heard this term on many sights but I have no idea what it means...can anybody out there explain please<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I had it when I was little....I think its basically when your rectum comes out of your anus. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). My dad said that when I had it, he just touched it (as gross as that sounds) and it went back up. I don't know what causes it, though

Above is correct: the lower part of the intestines coming out of the anus. Many times it can correct itself without help. Sometimes it has to be pushed back in with the fingers. Once my son had to be put under anesthesia so that the doctors could push it back in.

It is a symptom of CF. Once diagnosed, however, and the patient is taking enzymes the prolapses SHOULD (but not in all cases) stop.

What causes it? The frequent, bulky, and abnormal stools over time can cause it. It is quite common in poor countries where people suffer from malnutrition (just as many CFers are malnourished prior to diagnosis.)

When my daughter first started getting them she could get it to go back in by herself. She was only two and would go sit on her feet and push it back in. After awhile though, this wouldn't work so we had to put it back in for her. Once on enzymes, she only had one more.

Her doctor told us they usually stop happening once a child is over the age of three and on enzymes. This has been the case with my daughter.

It really freaked us out when it first happened but we are thankful it did b/c this led to her finally being diagnosed!
