recurring Staph Aureus

I would like to know if anyone else has had a young child with cf who has grown out staph aureus from the sputum culture on a regular basis. My granddaughter Ella seems to be the picture of health, but every other time she has a sputum culture done, it grows out Staph A., one time it grew out MRSA. I am looking for some suggestions on what others have done. Should we have everyone that has some regular contact with her be tested to see if they are a carrier? Can pets be a carrier? We try to keep her enviroment clean, good handwashing...etc...
Ella is 8 months old. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

DS has cultured staph the past 2 times he was in for a culture. They said that as long as he is not presenting any symptoms, they will not treat it. I think something like 80% of people carry staph, so I don't think it would do any good to test people that are around her more, but I could be wrong. I think that as long as she is not having any symptoms of the staph, that I wouldn't worry about it, we don't. Oh - DS is 10 months old.

Hi Barb, I know there is so very much to figure out with this disease. Staph is soooo common, its on every surface you touch -- no matter how clean you keep it, it will grow again. My 2 year old is "chronically colonized" with staph and has been since she was about Ella's age. We have gotten a clean culture once or twice after antibiotics, but it always comes back. The bad news is that when they get a cold, the extra mucus can kick up the staph and cause an exacerbation. But that has really only happened once with my daughter. Otherwise, she too is the picture of health. We do find that her appetite and her weight gain is better when the staph is under control. HOwever, they won't treat staph prophylactically with antibiotics because research has shown that when the staph levels are down by treatment, the higher likelihood of a word bug getting in there. Particularly pseudomonas is what I believe the research found. So yeah, it sucks to know your kid chronically colonizes a cf specific bug, because it reminds you that this is real, BUT as far as the bugs go -- this is one of the least troublesome.

A big Thank You to Shannon and Heather for replying to my questions. It does help tremendously to talk with other people who have had the same problems. I will pass this along to my daughter, this will help put her mind at ease too.
