Reflux and meds

I've been having a terrible time finding a reflux medicine that works for me. I took Protonix for several years and it really helped, but then insurance stopped covering it. I think it was a 3rd tier or something. So then they had me try something else - can't remember what, but it didn't help. Then we went to Zegrid. I had what the dr. called allergic side effects to that. He got insurance to approve Protonix, but this time around I got severe diarrhea and upset stomach, so had to stop it. He then recommended Prilosec OTC. That worked for a very short time, then I started getting reflux really bad again. Water, saliva, coughing - everything triggered it. Next he prescribed Nexium. That's made my stomach pretty sick so I tried Zantac OTC this past week, but it's just not cutting it. My reflux is so bad again.

So I'm going back to Nexium for now, but it really irritates me that I have to put up with an upset stomach all of the time from most of these reflux medicines.

Do any of you have this problem with finding a reflux medicine that works for you? What medicine DOES work for you? Do you have an upset stomach side-effect from yours?

Hello Aspiemom. I was taking 150 Mg of Zantac for years- and that seemed to do the job. Occasionally I would get an upset stomach. I have just figured out that I have a dairy sensitivity. I would constantly get severe rashes on my arms. If I would go to a doctor, 9 times out of 10 he would prescribe me some topical cream to put on it- a precise example of treating the symptom, not the cause. So far, I have eliminated or cut down my dairy intake and have not had any rashes, and as a plus my stomach hasn't been upset or acidic at all. I think I will give that homeopathic remedy that I substituted prior a try again. It makes sense, I consumed dairy products all of my life, but this week I stopped all dairy, and nothing. Humans are the only adults in the animal kingdom to consume dairy, IMO almost everyone has a sensitivity to dairy in some form, whether it be a rash, diarrhea, or upset stomach, you may not know it yet.

I used to take Zantac for years but its effectiveness wore off for me. My Dr. then prescribed Prilosec which worked for me but my insurace no longer would cover it so they gave me Prevacid. That seems to do the trick for me. I do not get any upset stomach from it at all. I hope you find something that gives you relief soon

Debbi, My daughter takes Prevacid. 60mg in the am and 30 in the pm. She really likes it and would'nt change. Keep in mind she is only 15 years old and weighs around 98 pounds. She has tried other drugs but had side affects with them. Not sure if this is help at all. My son had done Protonix for a short time. Only 6 months.
