Remedies for lost voice?

My daughter 10 with CF seems very hoarse/lost voice. She recently got over a cold. Any ideas to help? I've given her honey, losenges, mints. We always encourage fluids.

She has voice lessons today; think this would help or hurt? She refuses to cancel them.

I am 29 and have been dealing with hoarseness almost all my life, even before I was diagnosed with CF (I was diagnosed at 15). As you can imagine, I have tried a lot of things to make it go away, from chemicals to natural products and the only thing that really works is to rest my voice for a few days until it goes away. At one point I was seen by a throat doctor and he could see that I had polyps on my vocal cords, which makes me prone to losing my voiced easily. And then after many years I have come to realize the following: I am bilingual - I speak English and Portuguese - and I pretty much only get hoarse if I'm speaking Portuguese, but if I'm just speaking English I don't lose my voice for months on end. So I guess in this case it's got to do with the sounds of each language. Maybe not so much the medicines I take.I think having voice lessons is a great idea, and I think it can help. But maybe not when she is actually unable to speak, maybe it would be better if she waited until her voice comes back because her vocal cords need to rest.

Thank you. She did her voice lessons yesterday; but did not sing; they just went over reading music. She is frustrated. She has a very pretty voice , loves to sing and can not.

Rest is the best thing. SHe does have nasal polyps; I hope she does not have them on her vocal cords as well:( That would be awful for a little girl who loves singing.

I'll give her some time to heal maybe if it's still like this in another week; I'll call her doc?

Remedies for lost voice

I have a problem with losing my voice from time to time. ENT has not figured out why. I know TOBI contributes, but I'm not using it anymore. My vocal cords get red and inflamed. I think it might be related to inhaled steroids. The only solution (and I've tried everything!) is rest. I've had to go without any speech/especially no whispering, b/c that's worse than yelling apparently, for up to 3 weeks. However, if I strictly follow Dr's orders, voice is back to normal for years at a time. If you have an iPad or iPhone, there are apps for text to speech. That helps. Otherwise, I carry around a notepad and do terrible sign language. Good Luck!

Bharison posted the following in another thread regarding meds causing hoarseness. I know you are not saying your daughter's voice loss is a result of Tobi/Cayston but it may be worth a try:

I have had hoarseness with both Tobi and Cayston. I was advised by a pharmacist to gargle with Liquid Benadryl after each use. I find that this works for me. I use it at least for the first 10 days or so of either Tobi or Cayston and no hoarseness. I use either a generic or Benadryl brand. Sometimes I dilute it with a little water. I heard this works for Opera Singers also.

So an easy inexpensive option. Give it a try.

Take care and good luck!
