Ill hopefully be getting some lungs soon, and im nervous about the pain right when i wake up from surgery. how bad is it? are pain meds given a lot right after? basically how much does the surgery suck?

I didn't really experience any pain right after. I think really none. Just discomfort.
I had an epidural with the same drugs they use with epidurals for labour. I loved it, while I had it in I didn't feel any pain.

If your pain is controlled properly it is bearable. For me I am extremely sensitive to most things and the pain was excruciating and near unbearable - honestly I would have killed someone to get the pain to go away the first few days.
I woke up from surgery and was being given morphine via drip, but did not have an epi. The epi helped a lot with pain, but even once I had it the pain was still there. The second day of recovery was the worst for me - I just remember sobbing and begging for pain meds and at one point screaming - but that is a long story.
Basically - if the pain meds are working for you and things are being monitored properly you will be in some pain but nothing crazy. For me my worst day was caused by a change in pain meds - to a medication that just wasn't effective for me, so my pain level ended up through the roof while taking a med that did nothing for me. Once they found something that worked for me it was bearable.
Every persons pain tolerance is different, so I would look at your pain tolerance and judge how hard of a time you may have by that.

I was terrified pre TX that I would be in pain, but when I woke up, I was loaded on the good drugs. Within a day I was off the morphin, then I was on pecocete for a day, and then I asked for Tylenol. So, it was pretty pain free. Though, I was scared to move because I thought that would trigger pain, but I was fine. Don't worry about pain post TX... you should be concerned with exercising pre TX.

Not much pain for me either. It was pretty minimal. Most of the time in the hospital I was on darvocet. Pre-tx, I was most worried about pain though. I was really suprised how well things went in terms of pain management. Couldn't have gone much better.

Not much pain for me either. The 'pain' where they made the incision felt like someone tightened a belt across my chest so more of a discomfort. It was a bit painful to cough and the chest tubes were painful to roll over on to get a bed bath. But if you time your meds right (two percocets every 4 hours for me!) then you should do okay. I also do have an extremely high tolerance for pain and discomfort so I may not be the best measure.
