room air purifiers

I am going crazy with all the different purifiers out there. So many brands, so many types.
I am interested in the UV, as it says it kills bacterias and viruses. But I thought UV is not good for us, as is the reason we have UV protection on our sunglasses????
I am liking the idea of a permanent filter, but am I going to be able to clean it good enough for the machine to be able to do the best job it can do????
PLEASE HELP.....

I just recall hearing that the ionic ones that produced ozone weren't very good, possibly could cause issues. The relative who purchased our hepa filter for us orginally had an ionic one on order with the washable filter, but then had read a consumer report indicating that it really didn't clean the air very well unless you were in VERY close proximity to it.

We have one with a hepa filter which we change once a year, as well as pre-filters (charcoal), which we change every 3 months. We recently got an electric fireplace which came with a permanent airfilter and a light comes on when it needs to be cleaned; however, I'm really not sure how we're supposed to clean it. I vacuumed it, and it's still rather filthy and the light kept going on. The instruction manual said we could also use allergen furnace filters, which I opted to do instead.

i did ALOT of research before i purchased my air purifiers...the conclusion was that if there isnt a hepa filter and pre filter with charcoal (as mentioned above) i was wasting my money....unfortunatley they are the ones that usually cost more but i found a really good one on a website called allergybegone.com for about 160.00, it is a honeywell enviracaire model number is either 50300 or 50150. it has been great..i leave it on 24/7 and everyone comments on the "freshness" of the air in our apartment.
