RSV AND SYNAGIS VACCINATION

I just wanted to make you aware that if you hav a baby under the age of 2 with CF they may be eligable for the SYNAGIS vaccination. You should speak with your doctor now. This is a very expensive vaccination and I am sure some insurance companies don't cover it but it can't hurt to ask. We got it last year and will again this year for my 15 month old. You have to go for 5 shots (one each month) from NOV to MARCH (and I think we got a 6th shot last year in April.

I only mention this b/c I was not told about it last year. I brought it up to my doctors who then got the approval process started.

Thanks!

I don't know about the SYNAGIS vaccine, but I know that for RSV one of the best immunizations is breastfeeding. Very few exclusively breastfed children or infants are susceptible to RSV, especially if you care for them in your own home during the problem months.

Both of my kids got RSV. Actually, one of them got it twice. They were breastfed. Maybe we were the exception to the rule.

Of course breastfed children can get all sorts of things. This is true. I child who is exclusively breastfed for at least the first six months of their life and continues to be breastfed even for a couple of years total can have and catch everything a bottle-fed child can. However, evidence supports that exclusively breastfed babies are LESS susceptible to many things and usually have LESS SEVERE cases of the things they do get. This doesn't mean that breastfeeding didn't help them and it doesn't mean that the mother did anything wrong. I'm not suggesting that you don't get a vaccine that is needed. I am suggesting that we remember that there are other ways to help protect our children instead of or in combination with vaccination.Vaccines should never be taken lightly - especially new ones. If this new vaccine contains thimerosol, you should be extremely cautious about weighing your child's risk of RSV versus the possible benefits and risks of the immunization. Even trace amounts of thimerosol (mercury used as a preservative) can have devastating affects on SOME children's brains.
