RSV in Older Children and Adults

Friend of mine from high school indicated her child was in hospital due to complications from bronchitis, then she posted on FB yesterday afternoon that he was feeling better, tolerating treatments and they'd received test results that morning indicating he has RSV. He's a teenager...

RSV was the big scary boogey man when DS was a baby. Knew lots of people whose children didn't have CF who'd caught it and had complications. DS was on synagis shots that first year and we were told that as children get older, even adults will get some form of it, but it's usually just a cold with lots of snot as people develop more of an immunity over time.

So this threw me for a bit of a loop. DS has been dealing with a head cold all week long, so I'm a tad edgy. There've been a couple cases going around daycare with the babies, add to that influenza, strep and that dreaded stomach bug that's been going around town, it just makes me a little more nervous than usual. Guess all we can do is monitor the situation. Sigh! I'm such a worrier.

I didn't know teenagers and adults could get it either . I was around a 2 month old that had it just 2 weeks ago.

It was my understanding as well, that adults do not get RSV. Did they do a swab test? Those are not always accurate. Unless it was a collected sample of mucous, I would not think it was a very accurate result. We had a family member swab negative for RSV and at the ER later, test positive from a nasal sample.
