OK Craig, I'll bite. Look up on google under the phrase "rule of thumb". No, it doesn't really mean you can beat your wife as long as the stick is no thicker than your thumb! I guess that is folklore. It really refers to measurement with a part of your body. What brought this up, and what did she do?!!
