Running and lifting weights with a port

I got a port placed this past fall and have heard some stories from people about ports flipping and having to get a new one placed or have another surgery to correct it. I have been able to take up running a couple miles a few times a week and have been lifting weights. The running has been wonderful for my lungs and doesn't seem to affect or irritate my port any. I have concerns though about upper body weight lifting and its affect on my port, as the port was initially stitched into some of the surrounding muscles. My port is in my chest a couple of inches below the collarbone. Does anyone know of any specific exercises, lifts, or other things that shouldn't be done with a port, as far as causing possible flippage, harm, etc? The port took awhile to heal and in the meantime was painful, so I want to take good care of it and would hate to do something that would cause it to otherwise be harmed. Thanks so much in advance for any advice others have!

Good job on the excercise! I too have a port in the same location and have done every weight machine I can think of and there is not a problem for me, I also jog with it. I have also done both of these thigns while accessed with nothing other than minor discomfort whcih I felt the benefits to my lungs were far outweighing.

I had port replacement surgery two weeks ago and was accessed up until yesterday. In that time I managed all sorts of exercise; running, dancing, sex etc.
I've never heard of ports 'flipping'. They seem pretty immobile to me. I'd just keep doing what you always do.
Mine only broke in the first place because of my stupid veins. Nothing to do with being physical.
Hope this helps ;DD!

I too have a med port in the same location..it took about a month for everything to completely heal. once that happened i am able to do everything...i fish full time and make an average of 600+ casts a day..and never have any problems, i am also a emt and can lift patients without trouble..the best advice is to continue working out but dont do more than you can handle and you shouldnt have any problems
