Runny nose

Maggie has pretty much had a runny nose since preschool started. All her little friends have it too. She is not coughing(knock on wood). I think it's been about 10 days with this runny nose so far and I'm hoping it'll just go away. We are doing our usual regime:vest 3x day ,nebs 3 x day, also hypertonic saline nose spray 3x day to clean out the boogers. I've been encouraging fliuds, rest . The stuff coming out of her nose is pretty clear occasionally yellow. Any other ideas to help boost her immune system or get rid of these boogers. The first couple days of a cold the boogers don't even come out. She's just totally clogged. Now she seems less clogged in her sinuses(I think from the saline spray). I know as soon as this runny nose goes away , she'll probably get another cold, tis the season.

Probably just something to keep an eye on if it's clear. DS used to always have a boogery nose -- more stuffed up and thick boogers. His nose rarely runs. And I was under the impression that this was a normal winter/toddler thing until one of her doctors indicated he was concerned it was a sinus infection and prescribed a month of augmentin to knock it out. Was concerned it could develop into an upper respiratory bug and get into his lungs.

Is she on tobi? DS tends to get a boogery nose when he's on it and is constantly digging up his nose during that time. We try to use saline nasal spray to keep things moving.

Liza,

Maggie in not on TOBI. I too get concerned it could develop into upper resp infection, but she takes Bactrim once a day to supress her MRSA.My guess is augmentim wouldn't touch a upper resp infection in Maggie(unfortunately). I guess I'll give her a few more days.

I can't remember the average number of colds a toddler, child gets each year. Just recall thinking WOW, when DS's doctor told us the number and said he was going to get colds, the key is to keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't turn into anything worse.

Does Maggie know how to blow her nose yet? I think it was around her age or younger that my mom taught me to blow my nose. She said I too had a plugged up nose. The sweetie that she is she did mouth to mouth on me until I figured out how to direct the air out my nose and not into my lungs then I guess I put two and two together that I could generate this power myself. I've been blowing ever since! Maybe this is partially why I have no sinus issues. I think I was much younger because at 3.5 they talk alot, right? and you can coach them through learning something like nose blowing. Well I was too young to talk about it she had to show me. These are the sorts of things I thank my mother for so greatly. I would encourage a lot of nose blowing. A few years ago I realized if I never sniffed I could keep a cold out of my lungs as long as I didn't have post nasal drip which we all know doesn't accompany every cold.

LOL! Teaching how to blow your nose!
Brings back memories.
It was the first lesson Maria Montessori gave her first class.
It was almost the first lesson my daughter had at Montessori nursery school.
I think it is almost more important than toilet training for importance!

Here's a good link http://www.ehow.com/how_9504_blow-nose.html (of course, include the use tissue to catch what comes out of the nose part)

Lauren,

Maggie actually just learned to blow her nose, I think it does help. The way I taught her is I said to pretend to blow out birthday candles with your nose. She's better at blowing her nose now than me! I usually do the saline spray first then we have a big nose blowing session...Something very satisfying about getting the boogers out, yes I'm weird.

Thanks for all your input!
