Saline Solution Research

I was wondering if any of you have read the articles that were posted on MSN and all over the news sites about the Saline Solution Research.
It was published on January 18th, 2006 and was a study conducted in North Carolina and Australia, in which they used a concentrated form of Saline to "flush the lungs".
Anybody out there tried any of this? I am curious as my kids use a much less concentrated version of saline in their nebulizers on a daily basis and I would love to know more about this.

There are a few people on here that are using it. Many have had good results. Some didnt notice a difference. I personally will be trying as soon as I get my butt in gear. My doctor just started mentioning this to her patients because she was afraid we would want to replace pulmozyme & albeuterol with this. She says tho it has similiary functions as the other meds that in conjunction with the other meds instead of replacing them gives the best results!.

Thanks Melissa for this info. So it is actually out there and it is possible to get.Let me know how it works for you when you do try it. I was wondering if it is just for adults, since the research mentioned that it has not been studied for sideeffects in infants or very young children yet.

My Cf center uses hypertonic saliene as part of standard treatment. I love it. I live in colorado, so it's a good way to compensate for the dry climate, I use it in my neb at home, usually a 5% solution. What do your kids use?

Hi Debbie,
My kids use a sodium Chloride inhalation Solution. IT has a really low percentage of Saline. The research was talking about a 7-9% Saline that really flushes. We love the one we use but I can only imagine what it would a higher concentration could do. You would think that mucus would slide right out.....at least in a perfect world <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My daughter is not able to use saline treatments until her PFT improves. Her last PFT was only 47%. Seems so low yet she runs and plays all the time w/ ease. I don't have a full understanding of CF I was under the impression that 47% wasn't that great. Am I correct?

I think the youngest age group studied in the testing was 6 years old. I am not sure what the doctors are recommending for the younger cfer's but I will certainly ask when we go to cf clinic in a week.

To Debbie in Colorado...
Does your CF doctor say to mix the hypertonic saline solution with albuterol or do it separate???
I asked my doctor and she thought the 2 might not mix (might precipitate or crystallize) but she really didn't know for sure. We don't use hypertonic saline solution at our center.
thanks
JD
