Since my holidays are like gold now, I can't just take a day off for a doc appt. as a follow-up, so the wife went to get the results yesterday.

As I came home all worn out and feverish, she decided at 10 pm to tell me the doc's results.

I have a fatty liver..this was no surprise to me, since the doc I've been seeing for the past three years had been saying that all along (and the doc before him, too as a matter of fact)

Last week, I was introduced to a doctor that specializes in lungs at a hospital and was introduced to a female doc, which I find female docs in Japan to be. The doc I was introduced to last week told my wife at the follow-up she has heard of CF, and knew that there were 30 patients who were diagnosed with CF in Japan (I have to assume they are Japanese patients), a much lower number than what I last heard, but probably because of their knowledge of diagnosis and treatment. Oh--the doc also said I was her FIRST REAL case as a patient with CF--I wasn't thrilled.

The doctor looked at the CT scans I had brought in from when I had one done in 2007, and she compared them to the CT scan taken last week. She concluded that my lung condition hasn't changed in two years...supposedly thats good, though they didn't get better, they didn't get worse, either.

I was also told that most of my congestion was in the upper right lobe. In addition, they said from the blood samples that I didn't have "mold" in my lungs--they were referring to the apergillus, but when I asked the wife what they said about the PA, she said nothing was mentioned and asked why I didn't give any samples..I told her that our "family doc" has that info.
I found it hard to believe that the aspergillus could be tested by a blood sample, rather than a sputum culture. I don't think that PA can be tested by a blood sample, just by a sputum culture, so my doc and I would be the only ones who know my PA culture (I got a copy of the results).

Now, the big part--they diagnosed me with having diabetes just from the blood samples. I thought there was more to a diabetes diagnosis other than asking what I had for breakfast and when was the last time I ate as they took blood. They didn't do the test where I'm to fast and then drink orange juice like I've read about, so I still disbelieve I have diabetes because I don't see other signs of it. I just have a few cases where my sugars plunge once in a while.

I've already explained to the "CF virgin doc" that CF'rs who have diabetes don't have the typical type 1 and type 2, but a combination of them (from the information I have gathered). I actually thought the doc was going to treat my lungs, not my CF..now we'll see I guess.

However, since they are referring me to another hospital to add more inconvenience to my life, I'm to see that dr. about the results to the "diabetes" and "fatty liver".

But, gotta admit, the "CF virgin doc" is cute...

Wow! Just wanted to say Fred that I'm glad to hear from you. Was just thinking about you the other day --- saw a Chuck Norris shirt --- wondered how you were and if you and the Mrs. looked any more into moving stateside.

1. They can test your IgE levels for aspergillis in your blood. So they may have seen a high aspergillis specific IgE

2. They can test your HbA1c in your blood... if it's high, it's nearly certain that you're diabetic

Congrats on no progression in 2 years. That's great for a CFer

Hey Fred- just wanted to "second" everything that Amy said , and to recommend you to get a blood glucose meter and check own blood glucose numbers. First, check your "fasting" glucose number- aka, in the am before you eat or drink anything. Then during the day, make a note of what you had to eat, and check it one hour and then 2 hours after eating and keep a log. And have the dr.'s put you on Actigall/ursidoil for your fatty liver?
