Scheduling Port

Hey Everyone!

Talked to my dr the other day about scheduling a port placement for Sept. I've never had one, only had piccs. I am excited about the port but I'm a bit nervous too. Not sure how many days I need to take off. I was planning on having it done on a Wednesday or Thursday so I'd take a few days and I'd have the weekend.

Anything that I should think about when it comes to scheduling? I thought about the weather situation, Sept isn't too hot or too cold, so that may make a difference. Anything simple that you wish someone would have told you that would have made it easier?

Thanks for any advice you can give me! I appreciate all of you.

Probably two days at most. However, for a month or so you'll begin to wonder if that vice-grip is ever going to come off your shoulder -- so have the pain meds at your disposal. The procedure itself is pretty unremarkable. Just a few shots of lidocaine and before you know it you're done. Also, not sure if you have one already, but if you don't, be sure to change your shower head. Get one of those removable shower heads. It'll make showering so much easssier.

I think a Wednesday would be perfect.

I had mine done while admitted for a tune-up. For me there wasn't too much pain involved, mostly I would call it discomfort. (mine is placed in right clavical area) The area will be swollen for a few days and feel tight and limit your range of motion because of it. I think after about the 3rd day it was barely noticable.

As for the procedure itself, if you have anxiety don't be afraid to ask for enough meds to calm you (they'll put it in your i.v.). It was a little squirmish for me because they have to put the lidocaine in your jugular (sp?)! I only wish I had spoken up and asked for a little more anti-anxiety. I tolerated it all fine enough, but I could have been a little less anxious during the whole thing.

I'm 8 months out with my first port ever, and I'm a very satisfied customer. It sure beats piccs!

I'm not sure what incognito meant by the shower head?

My son got his first port at 2 months old and had to have it replaced April 2005. The second one he was 4 and he was grumpy the first day and back to normal the next day. Adults probably need a little extra time, I would try to schedule on a friday and hope to be back to work on monday. Ports are Great..... good luck with your surgery.
