Well, now that we're three-ish weeks into the routine, Mr. 1st Grader still hasn't got his self-administering enzymes at lunch issues totslly straight. I see a few options in that department, but I'm also thinking of that "Class Visit by Mom," wherein I take his vest and a few neat diagrams and hand-outs. Generally demystifying and explaining his situation and CF to all in his immediate class seems like a good idea to me. Anyone do this yet? If I could figure out how to search for it in the archives, I would...

Thanks, M'nell

I'm 20, and I used to give speeches to the health classes at my school when they would learn about Genetic Diseases, I brought in the videos, and showed everyone my enzymes...and gave everyone the general idea of the disease..I don't use the vest so I couldn't show that...but everyone did enjoy my presentation...and it may seem awkward talking about the first time...but it gets easier....it definitely was hard for me the first time, but I'm also the one with CF having to stand up there in front of everyone and tell them that it is life threatening, and I could possibly die tomorrow.
But I really enjoyed getting to do it, if it gives someone else a little knowledge about a disease that affects thousands, then I'm proud to talk about it.

My son is in grade 3 this year and every year we have done a presentation at the beginning of the year about CF and what it means. For Prep, Grades 1 & 2 we were lucky enough to have someone from Cystic Fibrosis Queensland come and do the presentation to the class and parents, however this year I had to do it myself as we moved to a remote area. It was as nevre wracking as anything and I will admit that i did well up with tears at a couple of points, but his teacher was great and stepped in and added some information whilst i pulled myself together. We dont have the vest in Australia yet, but I did take in the enzymes and all the other stuff I could find to help with providing information to parents.

The parents were really good and understanding and a lot of offers of 'how can I help?' instead of just pity which we dont need.

Good luck with it.

Yes! My daughter did a presentation herself in the second grade. We took pictures of her doing her treatments and taking her enzymes during dinnertime, etc., then made a poster. She prepared a little talk about what CF is and how it affects her and presented it in front of her class. The best part was the question and answer period. I was really impressed by the questions the kids asked and how matter fact all of them were, including my daughter. Most of those kids will go to school with her through highschool, so I think it paved the way for her to be confident and open about the whole thing. I think in first grade you could do the same kind of thing. I think doing it on their own gives them a little more power over the whole thing, rather than have Mom come in and speak for them. Depends on the kid tho. Mine never had a shy bone in her body! (Unlike me, thank goodness!)
