Sensitive lungs

Does any one else have super sensitive lungs. Whenever I go from hot to cold, walk by a smoker or by someone wearing perfume, I go into a horrible coughing fit. If so, what do you do to prevent this?

Yes, I do. It's really bad too. Every time I go into a super cold area I cough up a storm, cold like from a warm car to outside when it's in the 20's-30's (or lower...yikes). I can usually always feel it coming too. I haven't figured anything out on how to fix it, I just go through it.

I live in Maine so this is a daily occurrence for me. People look at me like I am dying. Plus my lungs hurt from all the coughing. I hate it.

I hate that reaction from people too! Very frustrating. We need some kind of breathing heater that we can put up to our mouths so that it helps balance the temperture. Maybe start breathing inside a scarf before you get into the cold, and keep breathing in that warmth so it's not a shocker to your lungs. Hmmm, maybe that could help. I'll try it too.

Cold makes me cough so I cover my mouth, but perfume (floral scented especially) closes my chest right up. I start wheezing & almost panicking. My Moms roommate has a sister who bathes in her awful scented perfume. I mean you could smell her across the room. My daughter use to run from her when she was little. I was glad because if she got ahold of my daughter she would reak (sp?) & then it was hard for me to hold my daughter. I finally told her that if she is going to be around me, she has to cut down & preferrably cut out the perfume. She has..................I dont think people realize how strong perfume smells on them or they dont care. More isnt always better.

I do put a scarf over my nose and mouth. It helps a little. I have tried hard candy to and that also helps a little. It takes about 15 minutes for my lungs to adjust. I am super sensitive to anything with floral sent to it. My chest also tights and I feel like I can't take a deep breathe.

Do you know if you have asthma in addition to your CF? The symptoms (chest tightness, coughing, wheezing if it's really bad) you describe are similar to my problems when I run into my asthma triggers - oddly enough they are... cold (generally need to be breathing hard for this one to be a problem), cig smoke, and perfume.

One would think that if nothing else helps, talking to your pulmo would be a good plan. Maybe a rescue (albuterol is the most common) inhaler would help.

My daughter has the same problems -- here in Seattle, the weather is not too much of a problem but the cig smoke and perfume do bother her -- no real advice on that, just part of the package huh?
