My two year old just finished his last day of Augmentin for a little cough/wheeze. The CF doc cleared him yesterday. Last night he started with a little rash. Today his rash was horrible- I've never seen anything like it.

He can't put socks on b/c his feet are so swollen. He has horrible red, raised blotches all over (big ones). The Pedi said it was probably rxn to Augmentin. CF doc put him on Orapred, the steroid for 4 days with Benadryl every 4 hrs.

Is this normal to have an allergic rnx after two weeks of being on the med? Does it mean he'll never outgrow it? We had him blood allergy tested but will take him for the skin test. Thanks.

He is so miserable that we couldn't get any good lung treatments in so now I feel badly about that as well.

I hope you've taken him to be looked at by now...allergic reactions are not "normal" and if it's as bad as it sounds, I'd not hesitate to go the the ER or at least his pediatrician

We have a few people that are allergic to some meds. I dont know when their allergies were apparent, but I know some people that need to go to the hospital for observation each time a med is started so they can be "desensitized" and observed for any allergic reaction. I dont know if its anything to worry about for the future, but its definitely not something to take lightly. The fact that it intereferes it interferes with a good lung treatment is a worrisome sign to me..........?? your doctor more!!!

No, he has never had an allergic reaction to any type of antibiotic before. He's been on many including Augmentin in the past. I did take him to the Pediatrician right away and he said sometimes they develop rxns even if no earlier problems and to give Benadryl and run its course.

I then took a pic of the rash, emailed it to CF doc and he prescribed the steroid. Aidan is doing better today-he can walk now and the spots are turning more purple than bright red. I just hope this is something he outgrows? Thanks. We see the CF doc on May 1st and area making an appt with a good allergist for skin testing.
