<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0"> Do you all think I am just being an overprotective mom? Here's my story:
I have two sons, one 2.5 and one 4 months. We'll start with the 4-month old -
DS2 was born at over 9 lbs. Had a lot of trouble getting out and a LOT of trouble clearing mucus from his passageways. He was making a lot of grunting noises while breathing so they kept checking his O2 which were borderline normal. He continued to breathe loudly and choke even after we thought he was cleared out.
He passed his meconium sometime on the second day, but he never had the big meconium blow out that DS1 had. At about 1 week he started to have mucus and a small amount of blood in his poop. This cleared up when I stopped eating dairy and gluten (he's exclusively breastfed) or coincidence?. He was also put on Zantac at this time for GERD that seemed to be causing wheezing, but we stopped it after a few days because his poops got really mucusy and painful.
At about 5-6 weeks he stopped pooping everyday. First he went 5 days, then 6 days, then 10 days, then 15 days, then 8 days, and now its been 14 days and no poop. He doesn't want to eat as much as usual and keeps waking up screaming trying to poop. His gas is STINKY! His poop is bright orange and really greasy/slippery - like it just slips around on his tush when I try to wipe him.
He is still always congested and his boogies are so sticky and hard to get out. He is also still spitting up a lot and lately it has consisted of large amounts of thick, stretchy mucus that he chokes on at times.
His weight gain was incredible at first, but now seems to be leveling off. I'm not sure he has gained in the past two weeks.

DS1 had explosive green frothy disgusting poops as a newborn and lost more than 10% of his body weight and had a hard time gaining for awhile. The poops got better for awhile, but increased in frequency when he was weaned in March. There is often undigested food in his diaper and it is always very soft and greasy. He had what we think was croup in November. He has been congested since then also. He had what we think was a sinus infection in December - thick, brown discharge from nose. He is all stuffed up still. In fact, he has never had a runny nose - it is so thick that it just hangs out in his nostrils. He has lately started coughing during the day, but has been coughing and choking at night for months and having disturbed sleep. He also snores. He is gluten-free and dairy-free, though allergy testing and celiac test came back negative.
It seems like both of them getting dehydrated very easily. DS1 had those "brick dust" urate crystals in his diaper as a baby and again just a month ago. He also has an acne like rash and very slight fever that come and go. DS2 has had dry nighttime diapers and very concentrated urine at times.
I am just perplexed. A lot of this seems like it could be CF, but it just doesn't seem possible to me.
Any advice would be helpful. Am I overreacting? Sorry so long ...
Thanks,
Sandra

IMO, tell your doctor that you want your children tested for CF. Have you mentioned your concerns to their pediatrician? What's his/her response?

Sandra,

I would push for sweat testing for them. Have you explored the possibility of CF with your pediatrician? If not I would discuss it at length with him/her and push for testing. It will ease your mind. Sweat testing isn't as reliable as a genetic test, BUT in your case, you are just seeing possible signs. It seems to me that if the test comes back borderline or even negative, you could then push for genetic testing if you are still concerned.

I hope this helps!

Welcome! It has been 14 DAYS since your sons last bowel movement?? My first thought would be that he needs to be seen in the ER to make sure he doesn't have a blockage. Forgive me if I am overreacting, it justs seems like that is too long. Yes, I would definitely push for cf screening. My nephew's main problem was constipation. It wasn't until my daughter was diagnosed as a newborn before he too was tested for cf. Push the dr to get your sons tested especially your baby. I am surprised that the dr hasn't tested him already.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 6 and Jack, 4 both with cf, aunt to Joseph, 10 with cf
