Should I be coughing up stuff already?

Hi all,

I was just on a round of merrem and zosyn for 2 weeks (was three weeks, but cut short because it was causing a reaction, and i was not showing any symptoms of illness or mucus anymore). It has been one week since they dc'd the picc line, and for the past few days, I have been coughing up very thick green stuff (I often cough up some green). Should I be coughing stuff up this soon? Is it just that because I'm being more consistent with my treatments, it's loosening up stuff?

I have pretty healthy lungs, so its hard for me to tell if this is a vicious comeback, or just the last of the gunk coming out because I'm using my vest more... the days of coughing up clear stuff make it hard to tell what's going on.

I'm planning to see my doctor, but that will be at least 4 days away.

Thanks!

As we get older (not sure your age) you cough more and more constantly. I remember years ago doing my first IV, ( I think I was 14), I was clear for weeks, but it came back. I realized it does not cure CF so it will come back. As time went on, the IV's never again gave me that clear feeling, but I knew it was killing the bugs in my lungs.

Just part of life with CF.

Thanks, Joanne... I'm 26. I've only had lung infections the past few years, and it just gets more and more often. It's frustrating because I always thought I wouldn't have to deal with infections! Yup, it is a part of life, indeed.

I think it depends when you are coughing stuff up. I've had tuneups for the last 8 years and in between I still cough stuff up, but primarily in the morning or when I am doing treatments/vest or exercising. When I am sick, however, I cough stuff up all day long (and night). I guess it's mostly getting to know how you are, with some changes as the disease progresses.
