showering with a port

Hi all,

I got a port in July, and I am now on IV meds for the first time since then. I had never really thought about needing to cover it up in the shower when it is accessed. Right now, I am just covering it with plastic. I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas.

Thanks!

Hi Mary,

I have been on IV's since February so my port is always accessed isgust; I am allergic to tegaderm , so i am using primapore, they are cloth like so i need to cover them up..

I was trying everything but the dressing kept getting wet, then i would have to call the nurse to re-dress it. So now on the day the nurse is coming i de-access my self after morning dose so i have a few glorious hours access free !!

This is the one and only shower i take during the week.. Of course i was up daily so as not to knock anyone out w/ my smelly self

If you are using tegaderm for your dressing , taping a plastic baggie over it should be fine..

Sorry i got into my whole ordeal lol Take care , Hope the IV's kick some serious butt

For years I have used saran wrap folded up and then taped to my skin to cover my port while showering. It works really well and you can fold it to any size. The last time I was in the hospital they gave me a product called aquaguard, it is a piece of plastic with sticky stuff on all 4 sides that keeps it stuck to your skin. It is basically the expensive version of what I already used.
Good luck!
