Sick again

Grant just finished a three week course of augmentin last week for a cough. He responded well and his cough was completely gone. Three days ago he started with a runny nose that has now turned into a very junky sounding cough. I've increased his albuterol and vest. I called that cf clinic today and the doc ordered bactrim that he will need to be on for three weeks.

He has never been on bactrim so I'm hoping he does ok with it. He has an appt at the clinic on Wed. I'm just very worried because he has been sick so much lately. I wonder if there is more preventive care we should be doing. Maybe pulmozyme? He is only two so I don't even know if he is old enough for it yet.

Sorry if I'm rambling I'm just very concerned. He cultures staph but I'm wondering if maybe something else is going on.

Oh Missy, I'm sorry to hear Grant is on the sick rotation again. It is so upsetting. They usually do the same care for Alyssa by starting her on augmentin and switching to bactrim if she is still sick. The bactrim has worked well for us, but lately it hasn't been as great and she's had to go to IVs if that didn't work.

I don't remember which doc they switched you to. I only know what Dr. K would do, but he was very willing put Alyssa on pulmozyme at 2 when I asked about it. Its a great treatment and we've had a really good year now that she is on it daily. Anyway, you should definitely ask about the pulmozyme -- any of the ped pulms are pretty receptive about that med. It might not clear this illness out, but it is a good preventative toolbox for once you get this cleared out.

I hope that sweet Grant is feeling better soon. CF sucks.

We'll be at clinic on Wednesday and talking about Alyssa's new cough as well.

You didn't say, but I'm assuming by staph you mean MRSA? At any rate, Piper is on bactrim frequently, and it does clear her up pretty well. At one point she was on Bactrim continually. I would def ask your Dr about putting him on pulmozyme at your clinic appt, Piper started it at 4 months, so there's definitely no age issue involved. If he's been fairly symptom free though, I guess they may have held off for that reason. Are you doing the other usuals? IE, albuterol/duovent, cpt, pulmicort or flovent? If he's ill often, a proactive stance is definitely better than reactive. Hope this helps...

Heather, thanks for your response. Grant sees Dr. K so I will definately ask him about the pulmozyme on Wed. He has had a rough month. You always have kind words and I really appreciate it- thanks again

Amanda, Grant does not have mrsa he has staph aureus(sp)He does do the usual albuterol and vest twice a day. He has been relatively healthy with only a few flare ups in the past(he mostly has digestive issues) I definately agree with you that preventative care is crucial. Thanks for your response

DS had issues when he was younger with ear and sinus infections. The augmentin took care of the ear infection, but it seemed like he had a junky nose all winter long. His doctor finally put him on a month long course of Augmentin to clear up the sinus issue as he was concerned with it getting into his lungs. If that didn't work he was going to put him on something else. I believe ds only cultured H. Flu at that time. Fortunately it did the trick. Hopefully they'll figure things out soon!

I just wanted to say that my daughters are both on Pulmozyme. Ashlee started it at age 2 w/ no lung involvement at the time. And Jordin started it in the NICU as an infant and is still using it...2 times a day most of the time.
