Sick Relative Coming to Visit

My daughter Lola is six months old and has CF. Her uncle is coming next week to visit her for the first time (lives out of state and is flying in and will be staying with us). He called last night to give me a heads up that he's had a cold for the past two days and was wondering what the protocol was in terms of him being exposed to Lola. He's hoping that the cold ends soon as his trip is in 8 days. I told him that if he's still sick, he can't come. However, I'm uncertain about how much time needs to pass between the end of his cold and his exposure to my daughter. Any advice?
Thanks,
Heather

If it's "just" say a head cold I'd be less concerned than if it was something with a nasty productive cough. And if it is a cold, it should be gone by the time he visits. I'd make sure in any event that he washes his hands, uses hand sanitizer before hold the baby -- if his cold his gone.

I actually got a nasty head cold right after DS came home from spending his first 6 weeks in the hospital. I wore a mask and washed/sanitized my hands constantly. DS was fine.

I had a similar situation as one of the other posters. About 2 weeks after our little guy came home for a month in the NICU, I got a nasty cold. I wore a mask, washed & sanitized my hands like crazy and he didn't get sick.
If he's still coughing, I'd make him wear a mask. Otherwise, he should be fine, just keep the sanitizer handy!

When DS 2 I got bronchitis and quarantined myself in the spare bedroom. I awoke from a coma-like nap to find DS sitting on my head, jabbering away. DH was doing an "excellent" job of keeping an eye on DS! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi - I usually wait 2 - 3 days after symptoms are gone befopre I let Asia contact someone after an infection. Most infections stop spreading around after about 2 - 3 days form last symptoms - however there are some sickness that develop 2 - 3 weeks before any efect show - so I decided that this I can't help - but I give 2 - 3 days.
A cold usually last 5 days = no matter how its treated.
But since it's a grown up - I'l stick to the ideas mentioned above.

May I add a voice of reason for the other side here? Lola is six months old and has CF. She is not immunodeficient. She has, I assume, normal or near-normal lung function. She is a growing baby who, if you expect her to weather life's milder storms on her own, is going to have to get a few colds along the way. A few a year, probably, if I may use every other kid on earth as a yardstick. CF kids are no different! And by cocooning them in little plastic bubbles trying to protect them from every germ and virus out there, instead of just the serious ones, you may be doing more harm than good in the long run.
I'm NOT endorsing throwing your kid to the wolves and having the next child with full-blown flu who comes along spit in her mouth. I'm not even endorsing chicken pox sleepovers. I'm just pointing out that our immune systems learn how to defend ourselves best early in life - and only by exposure to multiple bacteria and viruses.

Ds went to daycare from age 3 months on and did fine. His doctor told us he was going to get colds, stressed the importance of cpt. Our issues were mainly with relatives coming to events claiming it was just a cold and finding out it was something worse nd they weren't exactly forthcoming about it

Yes, Logan was in daycare from an early age (before his Dx), got colds here and there, but nothing major. In the long run, I agree in strengthened him. I have both my kids use the same caution- wash hands, don't share cups, use hand sanitizer. Beyond that, life should proceed as usual. I'm sure you'll communicate to uncle your caution and encourage him to wash hands often and try to keep some space, etc. I hope the visit goes well!
