I am going to have go on ceftazadime this week . I am wondering what side effects others have had from this . I am not allergic to penicillin . But I am allergic to bactrim . It's because of the bactrim that I am so sick it almost shut my lungs down . The last time I had iv's I was on ceftazadime and meropenum . My Dr said I was allergic to the meropenum(after being on it for 3 weeks) I had severe body aches, fatigue , fever, anxiety. I thought I was going to die . I had none of this when i went in the hospital . My liver enzymes were thru the roof. Just wondering if anyone that's been on ceftazadime had side effects. Thank you

I have had allergic reactions to that, fever, sick to stomach, and rash, never had a breathing problem, if you just get a rash, steriods have helped me with that in past so I could go on med. I have found that everyone is different. I hope and pray for the best for you.

I have been on ceftazadime, and I seem ok on it, very good drug I should say. I was put on it the first time as well, and didn't notice any side effects.

It is scary being put on any drugs period- ones you haven't been on before or even ones you have been, - because sometimes the same reactions you had, or non at all, -something can happen....!

Also, you gotta think, is this really the drug OR is it just my fear of the drugs? I think to the stress of doctors, hospital , people bugging you, - magnify the fear response.

I am allergic to Bactrim as well, but I ONLY get rash, - drug eruptions from it, so if I have to use it we will, at the cost of itchiness and redness !

I also, in my opinion, i try to 'bite the bullet' with certain MILD side effects because it will not be forever, so try to live with it for now, like the rash from Bactrim I get....

It is also good you educate yourself on side effects from different drugs, so it doesn't scare you to death because it is unexpected, and you can assure yourself ' this is the medication that's doing it, NOT me, I will be ok, once the drug stops"

Hope that helps, (NEB) good luck !

I have been on ceftaz many times, no real problems. But do have issues with others, like Cipro and Levoquine (the whole quinolone family is out), which are severe with anaphylaxictic reactions. Bactrim I get these odd blister like lesions which the docs say is a totally different type of reaction (latent, involves different antibodies) and won't try to desensitize me because I would be a high risk candidate for Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Other drugs give me issues, but not severe enough to not "bite the bullet" and just put up with the side effects for the duration of therapy.
I would keep an eye out for unwelcome side effects, you can always reach out to your doctor if you think something isn't right. With any med, even if it is something that has never given me grief, I do just that because you never know.
Hang in there, I hope everything works out for you.

That was a pretty good antibiotic for me. I get body aches and fatigue with pretty much all of them as well as a slight fever at times. I've stopped taking ceftaz for now because of a problem with severe numbness/tingling in my feet and hands which eventually shot up my legs and arms. Apparently that is not an acceptable side effect although I'm not quite sure of the reason. I had the same problem (along with a host of others) with quinolone drugs, but my doctor says it is very uncommon with ceftaz.

By the way, I'm also allergic to Bactrim--anaphylactic reaction. My understanding is that it is a drug to which many people are allergic, so don't let that scare you about all of them. They all have side effects, but as others have said, a lot of them you just have to deal with. I always check with my doctor when new ones show up to make sure they're "okay" side effects, though. You can't be too careful with all the meds we take.

Hope the ceftaz works well for you!

I have been on it and all it did to me was make me kind of sick and a little shaky other than that you should be fine. You get over it after a while.

I was taking IV Cipro and Ceftazidime during my last round of IVs. After a few days, I got really sick to my stomach, starting vomiting, felt like I was going to die. We stopped the Ceftaz and I got better quickly and I finished my two weeks with just the IV Cipro. The weird thing is that I had had Ceftaz several times before without problems. So just keep an eye on yourself. If you start getting bad symptoms, Ceftaz is a likely cause.

I have the same side effect with Ceftazidime - Hands and feet itching badly. My tongue slightly swallows and the saliva ducts under my tongue get inflamed. If I'm not given something for it (Benadryl), it can make my whole skin hypersensitive. It has also happened in the past that my eyes became hypersensitive to light.
It doesn't always happen though. It has happened only 3 times in my life out of the 25+ times I had it. However, when it happens, I notice come out of my IV course feeling worse than I felt before it. It gets rid of the lung infection, but I feel worse overall - weak and my lungs seem to have trouble taking up oxygen.

My hypothesis is that it affects all the mucous membranes. Lungs are a mucous membrane. So you want to avoid it from being inflamed or affected by drug side effects at all costs. That's probably why they stopped giving it to you. Unfortunately, it's the only antibiotic I can receive in IV along with Tobramycin, so I don't have the luxury of just stopping it.

Have you received Ceftaz with Cipro before? Maybe Cipro made you more sensitive. Not sure if it's a thing but it resembles my own experience with Piperacilin.
I had a big reaction to Piperacilin the first time I was given IV Cipro with it. We stopped the IV Cipro thinking it was the culprit and it seemed to have helped. The effect of that strong reaction took weeks to completely disappear (I remained weak several days after my 14 days IV course) but I was able to take more Piperacilin without any other strong reaction during that same IV course. However, it may have been that my body could simply no longer react (See : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desensitization_(medicine))
Then on another IV course without IV Cipro (we thought I was allergic to it), I had the same strong reaction to my first dose of Piperacilin. I have never tried it since.
My body cannot stand oral Levaquin either. So I'm prone to have trouble with fluoroquinolones.

The key that can help is to get desensitize to it in ICU. Also Benedryl to counter the reaction. Zosyn to counter the nausea etc.
I get the same reactions to all ab's it is a drag.
