Side effects from Cipro

Cipro is pretty strong, and I feel that I need sumtin' strong now as I feel pretty bad. But it seems that the only antibiotic I can tolerate is bactrim. I'm on day 3 of Cipro and I have a burning feeling in my hand, and a deep rash. Usually when I am on Cipro, right when I take the first pill, I get a burning sensation on my "happy place" and after a few days, the skin burns off and the flesh is exposed.

The Doc prescribed me some cream to help with the burning, and I'm also bumping up my Culturelle probiotic 2X a day.

Does anybody else experience side effects from Cipro?

Yes, lots of side effects! I took it for years and dealt with the side effects until it caused tendonitis. My doctor said we were done with it at that point since it can cause tendon rupture. Still, I would take it while you can tolerate it. It's not like there are a lot of problem-free options. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks. But I wouldn't say I "tolerate" it. I just feel so bad that I'm willing to endure the side effects; I'm willing to put up with 1 evil, so I can eradicate an even greater evil in my body. If these rashes get any worse, I might have to stop the Cipro, and finish off with bactrim.

Last night, I got a severe rash right on top of my eyelid; I had trouble keeping my eyes open and was constantly rubbing them.

Be careful with Cipro; it caused seizures for means just create a lot of problems! I have lived without it for six years, it's not easy but it is possible. It means doing a lot more IV abx but it is worth it, and going back on Cipro is not an option for me. What does you doc think about going off of it? Docs are usually not too happy about not using Cipro in my experience, but we have been very firm and had a lot of arguments in order to get our way.

Well my doctor seems perfectly fine with the fact that I can't take Cipro. Is there any other anti-biotic that works as good as Cipro? I have the same problem when I am on IVs also, the same burning and rash happens, just alot sooner on IVs.

My doctor was the one who told me no more. For me, that means IVs every time for pseudomonas, which is I why I took it for a long time in spite of all the issues it caused me. Would some benadryl help with the rash?

No, no orals work like Cipro. You can try inhaled Cayston and/or Colistin but otherwise it's IVs, and not IV Cipro, other drugs. It's an unfortunate problem to have but seems to be increasingly more common.

The doc prescribed some sort of topical cream. Clotrimazol or sumptin' I think. Anyway, the rashes seem not to be as severe as they usually are when I'm on Cipro.

Does anyone know when inhaled Cipro is going to be available? I know its in the works and i hope it avoids the joint issues.

This seems like a pretty severe side effect... not sure about your options... but if you think you can pull through an infection without taking antibiotics (with a lot of work and physical therapy) you should definitely do that instead of taking antibiotics.
Try eating things that boost your immune system, too.

You SHOULD NOT take probiotics while you take Cipro, as part of the antibiotics will go to killing those extra bacteria that you put in your body, instead of killing your lung infection. (Ask your doc about this)

Levaquin... but if you get side effects with Cipro, Levaquin will likely be 1000x worse. So I wouldn't touch it... or only touch it if you're in hospital so any serious side effect can be dealt with right away.

Side effects are not the same than allergies. If it is determined that it is an allergy rather than side effects, then it would help.
A rash does sound like it's an allergy though.

Cipro doesn't bother me as bad as Levaquin did. My word after being on Leva by oral for two weeks then in the hospital with the IV form I thought my knees were gone. Shame those meds have to have such harsh side effects..

I take cipro whenever I get an infection and I don´t have side effects from it. I actually used to take another one which name I cannot recall and I had lots of side effects on that one, I felt like a schizophrenic, so I switched to Cipro and it´s been fine. But mind you, I don´t suffer from muscle or joint pains.

I have 8 pills left, and so far, so good; only a few rashes, but they will go away almost immediately after I stop. If it cured my lung problem, and I think it did, I'd say it was worth it.

Well I've upped my dose to 2 Culturelle a day and it has kept the burning away, for the most part. But I will ask my doc about probiotics and Cipro. My toilet looks as if an atom bomb went off in it, as I have constant diarrhea now, I probably go to the bathroom after every meal and after I eat anything.

Cipro is hardcore

I have used cipro off and on for about 15 years and my joints and tendons have steadliy worsened very time. I am an avid exercise nut and wish my Dr. had warned me years ago of these side effects. I just finished up what I have decided will be my last course of Cipro, the joint, bone and tendon pain have become too bad. At 40 my joints are not recovering from it like they used to, be careful taking it and weigh your cost vs rewards of doing so. I am on my first ever round of Cayston right now with some promising results 10 days in. GOOD LUCK.

Im surprised the Dr. isn't changing your abx w/ symptoms you are experiencing. I get rashes from a few different meds & my Dr.s have discontinued them. Next step for me may be desensitization.. In any case, I hope you feel better.. doesn't sound to pleasant ..

Well, knock on wood, but Cipro hasn't affected my joints. I drink Joint Juice with glucosamine every day though.

A couple days ago I noticed I had a real stiff neck, and my left side hurt. I didn't think anything of it, I thought I just slept on the wrong side or something. But last night my entire left side hurt- including my lungs. I woke up at night unable to sleep on my left side; it felt like I was in the middle of a heart attack.

The pain is still there, and I am positive it is a side effect of Cipro. The usual burning hasn't spread to my happy place, so maybe it's effecting other areas. I only have 6 pills left, but I threw them out tonight. I'm done with Cipro, it did what it was meant to do, and gave me a whole host of problems. If I have to take another anti-biotoic, I'll stick to the good old reliable Bactrim. Goodbye Cipro, don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya!

Thanks for everyone's concern and input!

My daughter has reactions to Cipro, but not to Levaquin. I'd ask your doc if you could try Levaquin.

I had some kind of reaction to Levaquin also, it was so long ago that I can't remember what it was. So far, Bactrim is the tried and true antibiotic for me.

Without fail, when I took Cipro I ALWAYS developed thrush in my mouth. It was AWFUL!
I have a feeling that my constant joing pain & tendonitis in my wrist is probably from all the Cipro I had to take pre-trans.
I always had a bad case of the runs when I took it too. I don't miss the antibiotics in the least!
Good luck, I hope you won't have to suffer much longer.
