sinus issues
Hello, My 30-month-old son has been having some sinus issues for the past three months. He has daily nasal drip (sometimes clear, sometimes green) and it sounds like his sinuses are stuffy--especially when he sleeps, he snores and snorts loudly throughout naps and throughout the night. This has been happening non-stop, with no break, for about three months. At his last clinic visit two months ago, I mentioned that this was happening, and that his appetite seems to have fallen off pretty much completely when this started, that he was also having difficulty sleepilng with this, etc. The nurse practitioner we saw during that visit said he "just had a cold" and that there was no need to do anything. This has continued. We go back to clinic next week. Every time I bring this issue up, she minimizes it. I feel that his stuffy sinuses are having an impact on his sleep and lack of weight gain, as well as making him lethargic. What can I do to help treat the problem. How can I convey this to his provider? THANKS for any advice.

Have they done any cultures? DS used to have this issue as a baby and we assumed it was just a normal thing -- that most kids have junky noses during the winter and we thought if it was an issue his doctor would say something. His CF doctor DID notice it and prescribed augmentin for 30 days to get rid of it once an for all, concerned that his sinus infection could get into his lungs.

I do have a friend who pushed for an ENT consult at her clinic because her daughter wasn't eating, wasn't sleeping, had some dental issues. Her sinuses were a mess and she needed surgery. Completely different child once she had surgery. Could breathe, eat and sleepl

Since you're going to the clinic, indicate you are not comfortable with "it just being a cold" as it's been going on for several months, that you're concerned it's going to get into his lungs, that he's unable to eat and sleep. My husband used to remind me that we're the customer and we're paying for those appointments. So IMO, be assertive -- indicate that's not acceptable, that you'd like then to do something, refer you to an ent, speak to a different doctor besides the NP.

I will say that when DS is on Tobi nebs, his nasal passages get inflamed, irritated and he's pretty much stuffed up for the entire 4 weeks. Sinus rinses have helped once he got old enough to do them.

I agree sounds like it is time to see an ENT for sure. Good luck!! Don't let them minimize his suffering, I can't stand it when my baby can't breathe. And the sinus rinses are a God send. They are hard to get use to but cleans them out where they can breathe. It doesn't hurt them, it's just different feeling.

This happened to my daughter after a series of colds last year. She had started snoring 2 weeks before we went to the ent. I had this appt scheduled 3 months in advance just because we wanted to get established just in case something happened. Well, turns out she was at the end of a virus when we went and her tonsils were swollen and fluid in both ears. He put her on 10 days of antibiotics. Snoring went away and the. Came back 5 days after the last dose. We had coincidentally reintroduced hts at that time (had been burning her nose) so the docs thought that may have been causing it. This was february. April, after 2 months of sleep apnea induced snoring and ALOT of stress on my part, we had a cf clinic day. first culture of staph. I insisted they put her on 21 days of augmentin because I read it takes at least that to get rid of a sinus infection. After this, introducing the netipot and trying sinupret, the snoring completely went away. It was clear to me then that she had a sinus infection the entire time and I am certain that is how the staPh showed up. Now we preventatively netipot daily. They last culture showed normal flora, but she was on the end of an antibiotic treatment for another sinus infection (although super mild this time). I hope my story helps you.
