Sinus rinse question

My son, Jack, had sinus surgery last week. The dr told me to use a saline nasal spray, but did not say what kind. I have been using a brand called Ocean. I have noticed a lot of people mentioning the NeilMed Sinus Rinse Pediatric. My husband was not able to find the pediatric one at Walgreens. I looked on-line and it looks like they are in packets. Is that what is recommended? How do you keep the bottle clean? Thank you.

I used to use regular saline spray in a spray bottle, but then noticed we'd get a backwash affect, simlar to using a bulb syinge. So we switched to Simply Saline -- compressed air/aersol.

Last winter, I bought an ayr (similar to neil med) sinus rinse kit for myself, but DS was really stuffy, so I got him to try it. Basically, I boiled water for 20 minutes to sterilize it -- let it cool. Then I poured a packet of salt powder into the empty ayr bottle and added to cooled (still tepid) water to the bottle. Shook it up. Had ds lean over the sink with his mouth open, gently squirted the saline up one nostril while telling him to breath thru his MOUTH. And out came some nasties.

Hi Sharon. We live by those Neil Med rinses! We actually use the adult bottles on Aidan now because his sinuses are so horrible. You can order pediatric online- just make sure you get the starter kit b/c that one comes with the bottle you will need plus the salt solution that goes inside.

We boil the water, let it cool and then fill the bottle and add the solution. Then we squirt it up one nostril at a time- when the sinuses aren't blocked, the water will flow through the other side. We do it in the bath b/c it can be messy and takes some getting used to for the little guys. I do my best to dry the bottle out by hanging it upside down and alcohol the top. Aidan is great at them now- we have been doing them for over two years. When he has an active sinus infection - the stuff that we get out is unbelievable... How did Jack do with the surgery? Was he getting alot of infections?

Hi Megan,
Jack did fine with the surgery. I actually had no idea he was having sinus problems. We hadn't been to the ent for 2 yrs when I thought they should have a check-up to make sure they didn't have polyps. My nephew with cf has a lot of sinus issues and occasional polyps. Their ent dr said they should just get a cat scan of their sinuses as a baseline. Neither one of my kids has ever had a sniffle, a runny nose maybe twice a year with a cold and never a sinus infection. Their ent said the cat scan showed severe sinus disease and they both needed surgery. Uhhhh! I couldn't believe it. After thinking about it, I decided that might be the case but since they had no apparent issues, we would wait until they did. Their cf dr and their ent dr disagreed and said Jack especially needed it now. So I went a long with it. He had the surgery a week ago. I sure hope this sniffling that he does constantly now will go away soon. He has packing for the next week, I am hoping his sinus drainage is related to that or when he heals it will be better. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, but it is bothering me. It sounds like he has a bad cold now.

Thank you Liza and Megan for explaining the sinus rinses to me. The dr was trying to talk to me right after surgery as Jack was waking up screaming. I told him I wasn't listening very well could he write the instructions down. He said it was written down. Turns out he meant the prescription had the instructions. The same thing happened when Sophia had g-tube surgery last year. I went home clueless. I wish drs would give a handout!
