Sinus Rinses

DS started sneezing and developed a runny nose this past weekend. Figured he got a cold because his nose rarely runs -- first time ever was when he started pulmozyme at age 2 1/2 and then a year or so ago when he got a cold, which turned into an upper respiratory infection.

Anyway, runny nose has turned to thick, yellow goo -- sorry if TMI and I've chased after him with the simply saline, steamed up the bathroom and let him soak/play for awhile to get things loosened up.

Just wondering about using nasal rinses. It's already quite a production getting after him with saline spray. He'll allow us to use the bulb syringe to suction stuff out. Any tips, suggestions from those who regularly use the neil med or other nasal sinus rinses?

Currently keeping an eye on him -- so far no cough or fever, just stuffy nose -- if things change will call the doctor...

May or may not work but we call it the boogie monster (Neil Med seems to be easier since it comes out the other nostrile). We tell a little story how it is hungry and then we try to make it fun to blow boogers everywhere. Little boys seem to love the idea of being gross! It works most of the time. We are going through some boogs at the moment in our house too!

Liza,

Over a year ago, Maggie had this thick, yellow goo from her nose. Her doc gave us a "recipe" for saline rinses for a hypertonic saline rinse for the nose. You take a glass mason jar, fill it with sterile water, mix in 2-3 tsp of kosher salt and a tsp of baking soda, dissolve and then we used a brand new empty ocean spray saline bottle and try to squirt it up Maggie's nose. It was painful for Maggie, she pretty much would look at us and tell us she hated us. Needless to say, we stopped the rinses, she needed antibioitcs, for a month. Then a few months later, we started her on 7% hypertonic saline nebs(we use a mask), Seems to keep things clean sinus wise and we have not had to to saline rinses. She tolerates the HTS neb, course she's stuffy today. I'ld just keep up with the Simply Saline and warm baths to keep the nose run, the saline rinse up the nose was so harsh. Just my opinion.

I did rinses myself a few weeks ago when I had a sinus infection -- had a similar recipe from my ENT. Bleah! So I wondered how he'd fare if I attempted it. I'll keep doing what we're doing, be vigilant. But figure if need be, will try the rinses. He's got an appointment with the local CF doctor next week.
