Sinus Surgery questions...

I don't usually post many questions, but I'm hoping some of you can help me...

I'm scheduled for my 1st sinus surgery and have to admit that I'm pretty apprehensive about it. The doctor told me the basics of what to expect (feeling like I have a bad head cold for a week) but with you who have done it, what's it REALLY like? What can I really expect?

Also, I've read a few of the sinus surgery posts I could find, but overall do most of you feel it was really beneficial?

Finally -- do any of you think I should call my doctor's office to report that I know I have psuedo going out of control in my sinuses at the moment. Would it be bad if I go through the surgery because of this?

Thanks -- all of you are always great here!

Laura, I don't know about anyone else's experience, but I didn't even need pain medication after my last sinus surgery. The most difficult part for me was feeling like my nose was stuffy and just dying to blow it.

As far as the pseudo, that shouldn't make a difference. The dr. should biopsy what they find to see what is growing there in case there are any other bugs in addition.

Hi Laura,
I had a sinus surgery about 12 years ago. I really didnt want to do it, but i had to get a second opinion and he said i def. should have it done. I had a lot of polyps and my sinus were so clogged i couldnt breathe out of my nose at all. The surgery itself took 3 hours and it took me almost the same amount of time to wake up after the surgery. They had packing in my nose with strings taped to my cheeks so they could pull it out. Kind of looked like a nasal tampon....lol
They squirted saline up my nose every 2 hours or so for the first night and the next day the Dr. came in to take out the packing. I asked him if it would hurt and he said "yes, it will feel like an electric shock but be gone within a second" I was hoping he was kidding but he assured me he wasnt. Well he was right , but it was amazing how in an instant the pain was gone as fast as it came. They had me lay on an incline position for 2 weeks after the surgery. I think i was pain free within the 3rd day. I had no pain meds at all after the surgery. If i did have any pain i took plain tylenol for it. I have only had the one surgery and so far so good. Regarding you having a sinus infection now, you may want to mention it before you have the surgery just in case it is a problem. Good luck :)

heyy i've had about 5 sinus surguries and one coming up. it depends whether or not it is a major or a mild surgury (i've had both). my most severe took about 3 or 4 hours and i had a LOT of polups. i was bleeding and throwing up blood for a day. I bled a week later and packing was needed (it is basically a tampon for your nose and i'm not going to lie it hurts like hell) BUT that is the most severe. i hadn't had packing put in while i was awake after that, but i have woken up with it a couple times. the packing coming out is a quick pain but its a big relief.

my other 4 were all regular cases and i was able to go home that night or the next day with little pain and little bleeding. one tip is to ask the people who are doing anesteisia (spelling) to suck out the stuff in your belly before you wake up cause a lot of blood drips there which usually makes me throw up(they usually do it without asking but i would check). basically you feel stuffed up and waking up can be kind of painful but if it is they give you pain meds. for a couple days i was blowing out huge clots and scabs but it was a relief. my mom (a nurse go figure) loved to see the crap coming out of my nose.... after i wasn't able to do contact sports for a couple week so it wouldn't bleed and sometimes i get small scabs at the bottom of my nose. however my sinuses felt SO much better and my lungs as well. its well worth a couple days of mild pain.
