I don't really have an answere, but I have a 3 year old who is the same way. She gets up about 10am then naps from abot 1-5, and then goes to bed at about 8. She is alot younger than your 10 year old, but still we only see her for about 6 hours a day. I don't know what to do either.

have they had vitamin levels checked frequently? Low absorption can make you vey tired.mum to 14yr old Freya, with CF

i would advise also asking for a blood glucose monitoring kit to check her sugar levels for a while; i was sleeping ALL the time before my diabetes was diagnosed, and now i am on insulin i have so much more energy, the change is incredible. unlikely at her age i think, but might just be worth ruling out. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

When was the last time your daughter had a check up with her CF clinic? Have you mentioned it to her docs? The reason I am asking is because my daughter did the same thing. Not to alarm you but here is our story. She was diagnosed at age 3, always healthy. No pulmonary infections, not even so much as a bronchitis. Her diagnosis was a "freak" one. The doctor had her tested twice because he didn't believe the first one. Anyhow... that is background. She was seen in CF clinic every 4 months, no hospitalizations. Flash forward 5 and a half years. We noticed she was napping alot. Unusual for a third grader. Her clinic appts. were still every four months. All was fine at her last appt., on her next appt. she had lost alot of weight. We didn't see it they say because it was so gradual. Turned out her lung functions had gone down from a "normal" childs level to I can't remember what. Enough for them to admit her for 10 days. She bounced back just fine, it was another four years before she was hospitalized again. But I tell you what, I notice how much my girls sleep now, and start monitoring when they start sleeping more. My girls are teenagers now, they all sleep alot anyway but I watch to see if its for a long period of time, like days. I have a scale in my kitchen where they check their weight once a week. I wouldn't say I'm a fanatic about it, I just make a mental note. As teens they are responsible for keeping track of their weight. Not on paper or anything but a mental note so when they go into clinic they can compare what they are at home to what they are in clinic. We have a digital scale that goes from kilos to pounds. My advice is, if she hasn't been seen recently, mention to her docs that she is sleeping alot more. And if there is no real reason, like lots of physical activity, you know days at the zoo, swimming, stuff like that that makes a kid tired. If it's happening every day. Tell them that. What are her o2sats? My daughter had dipped into the 80's. We didn't know until her clinic visit. But in my opinion she needs to see her CF docs. Let us know how she is doing. Liza

I also have a 11 year old son that sleeps alot. I was having to pick him up from school twice a week because he was not feeling well.....In reality he was tired. He would come home and sleep for 2-3 hours, wake up and be fine. We were at his appointment last week, his labs are all good, pfts good high 80s, good weight gain, hes 83 lbs. Ryan has always slept alot, even as an infant, sometimes its just part of who they are. I would definitely get a checkup to rule out anything. It will give you peace of mind.Take Care

I agree on the blood glucose kit too. I have CFRD and when my sugars are high, I feel tired & sleepy. Maybe watch for a pattern--does she seem sleepy after eating (maybe in the first hour or so?)Lung function could be down too, you probably should have that checked too.Sleeping alot could be a sign of depression, but at that age, you wouldn't think that would be it at all.I'm not suggesting ALL these things or any of them for that matter could be wrong, just throwing out suggestions. It could be that she just is that way & needs her rest and there's no other explanation.

My daughter is 11 and has always liked to sleep, but I think it's genetic. So do I and her older non-cf brother. But she often comes home from school, lays down for a nap around 4 and sleeps until the next morning. She has been sleeping a lot more the past 4 months and recently cultured Pseudomonas. So, she must have been tired from trying to fight that off. Has your daughter had a sputum culture lately?

just updating everyone who replied to my post. My daughter is still sleeping most of the day away to the point the school could not give her grades at the end of the year because she sleeps in class, we go to cf clinic every 3 months or sooner if she is sick, they have done a fasting suger test, blood work, vitamin levels, sputum test, heart test and still no reason for sleeping. next we are going to do a sleep study, her lung funtion is good ,lung ct showed mild lung disease, o2 levels most of the time around 90. she will be 11 this week and weights 53 lbs. her twin is 85 lbs. and about 4 inches taller with very little health problems . THANK YOU ALL FOR YOU HELP.

You mentioned her o2 level of 90. Is this the o2 saturation number? My Dr likes mine to be 94-95 or better, but I'm an adult, so maybe a child's level is different. I am not on o2 because I'm usually around 95, but wondered if anyone that is on o2 could respond & let us know at what saturation level did your Dr suggest oxygen? I'm curious to know in case mine dips down. I had heard 88 or so, does this sound right??
