Smoking

My father is a smoker. I didn't grow up with him and I only visit him occasionally, but just this past weekend while I was visiting, he lit up right in front of me! Granted we were outside barbequing, but still. My step-brother's girlfriend, who is so awesome in every other way, is also a smoker. I'm not sure they understand how bad it is for me to be around the smoke.

I don't want to infringe on their rights at all and I don't want to not see them either. How do I avoid inhaling their smoke without being rude, offensive, or cutting them out of my life entirely? For that matter, what do you all do when you encounter smokers when you're just out and about? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0">

Since you were outside he probably didn't think anything of it, my husband does the same thing when we're out on the deck or in the car. I just have to remind him that he can't do it around me. Its really a force of this very bad habbit. We've been together for almost 2 years and married for close to 1, but still he tries to light up whem I'm around. He quit for about 3 months last year and it was heaven! Then his grandfather died and he was right back to it.

When I'm out in public (there is no smoking in bars in Washington, thank goodness!) I flat out tell people that I have lung disease and ask if they would mind putting it out. I'm always polite and most people are totally cool about it.

You can't. People like that who are so self-absorbed that they can't see what they do harms someone who is very vulnerable often times can't be changed.

So it's up to you. Put your lungs in jeopardy or don't see them.

I make sure education isn't the issue. I explain what the deal is. If they don't change, then I don't put myself near them. End of story.

I only get one pair of lungs....
