I was just wondering if anyone out there is on disability? My husband and I are going to try to get if for our daughter (has cf) but we have heard stories about how everyone gets denied the first time and you can only get it with a lawyer's help. I was just trying to get some input. Thanks.

I think as a rule it is difficult to get especially as a young CFer. There are a few people (mostly adults) that got approved the first time applying, but I think most had to appeal the denial at least once. Having CF alone wont guarantee approval. There are certain requirements that need to met such as certain PFT level, hemoptysis, inhaled antibiotics &/or frequent hospitalizaitons or iv therapy. Julie is a good one to help although she is quite busy. You might even want to consult with Beth Sufian. Beth is an Attorney/Advocate for CFers who has CF herself. She handled my appeal. Beths contact info is:

Sufian & Passamano, L.L.P. 811 Rusk Avenue, Suite 712 Houston, Texas 77002 Telephone: 713-224-1166 Facsimile: 713-224-1161 E-mail: BethSufian@aol.com

i first applied when i was 18...it took a year to get it. i was not denied though. I think the main thing like others have said is your PFT's. thats what really shows how bad your CF is. Ive been on SSI ever sence and i will be 25 next month.

I applied about 5 years ago. I was required to get an evaluation by a doctor of their choosing to see if I qualified as being sick enough to claim disability. They only did a PFT and took some x-rays.....that was it. After seeing my x-rays the doc agreed I should be on disability. After that it was up to social security people. The wait here in VA. is 9 months after applying and then they hold you a month behind.....10 months before you see anything from'em. It is harder to get disability when you are younger because it's hard to prove that the damage from CF can keep you from working. And thats all social security cares about.....whether or not you can actually work. If you get denied don't worry too much, just apply again later but don't take no for an answer, it just takes time if your younger. Hope this helped<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

I started the application process in December and I'm still working it out with them. Even about 2 weeks ago they asked for more information...Which Julie very nicely helped me out with. They are being very customer friendly I will say that and they are being very upfront that getting approved takes a long time...and I think my case is probably pretty straight forward..I have a 17-20% FEV1...

I first applied when I was 35 (?)
My FEV1 was (I'm guessing) about 55% at the time. My O2 was from 88 - 94%.

When they sent me to the local facility for PFT testing, I deliberately didn't try to blow hard (not knowing how strict they would be, and knowing I definately couldn't work anymore, I wanted to be sure help wasn't delayed).

Anyway, I was accepted the first time. I didn't need an attorney.

I suppose it's all dependent on lung function and o2 - but does anyone know what the cut-off point is in deciding?

The part I had trouble with was food stamps. They approved me, but for only $24 dollars a month. I laughed. I'm sure with a note from my doctor, I could have appealed that amount, but I didn't bother, since I had a little bit of help from my sister.

If you can work, it's better - more money into what you will get out later.
If you can't, then my best wishes that you/your daughter will be approved THE FIRST TIME!

It's such a backwards system sometimes - those that really need the help and don't have the strength to fight for themselves, are forced to...while the lazy and irresponsible get away with robbery! (I can say this - I was there at the SS offices waiting all day with the degenerates seeking free handouts)

Oh, another "trick" for me:
When I had to go to an appointed appointment, I dressed down, didn't do my hair or makeup. That way, I didn't look "good" (only because my sister said that when I fix myself up, I didn't look sick) I wanted all the help I could get so that I wasn't put through the ringer and left having to fight for all that crap by myself. (I wasn't married at the time, and my parents were both terminally ill - I was doing it all alone.)

The requirements for children and adults are VERY different. How old is your child?

I'm happy to help point you in the right direction and give you some "tools" that have assisted others with the process, a number of others on here have utilized them, and I learned most of my info from Beth Sufian. She's a wonderful woman. But if I can save someone else the $$$ of going with a lawyer, I will.

The downside is of course the extensive wait time for approval. And most often, you are denied a MINIMUM of two times. The key there is to APPEAL! Whatever you do, DO NOT re-file a new claim. Appeal appeal appeal until you are blue in the face!

Le me know if I can help, my email is division902@verizon.net
