my son got out of the hospital the other day from a tune up and he was eating fine that was until we got him home, i gave in and went to checkers and bought him chicken nuggets and fries but i went to the store and bought the same thing and he refuses to eat it ,i am puzzled. He can not live on jelly sandwhiches and cheetos which is what he requests me to make him, i am worried about this. He refuses any other food the last 2 days. Can not figure out what to make of this ? He is finally drinking water again thankfully ,i got him to believe it is delicious. When should i really be worried about how he is eatting?

Can I ask how old he is? My toddler is refusing most foods these days and extremely picky! He would live off of Pediasure, rice, and cheetos if he could. Plus today he refused breakfast altogether and ate a tiny bit of lunch. It's enough to drive me insane. I'm not really sure what to tell you but just wanted to tell you I hear ya! I haven't quite figured it out myself. I'm glad you guys are home though!

I don't think irrational food preferences are the sole province of tots with CF, but I think our preoccupation with their eating/weight puts us more on the defensive than other parents. My son is 3 and eats plenty of calories so long as we don't fret about where they come from. He will eat McDonald's chicken nuggets and fries with much greater gusto than any of the half-dozen brands we've tried at home - except for home-made buttermilk crusted chicken. Same deal with hamburgers - he eats enormously well at one specific local burger place but is pretty indifferent when we try to fry or grill one at home. Meanwhile, parents of his non-CF playmates report equally wierd food issues so we're pretty much just going with it these days. It's actually kinda funny at tot gatherings because here we are with a house full of all the "awful" snacks that all the kids are thrilled to eat because their parents are trying to get them to eat carrots and broccoli...

Toddlers! Last night I was told by DS that he wanted pasta. Got to the table and he threw a fit. "I don't WANT that". Then he told me he wanted ham patties and sponge bob shaped cheese (cheese slices). Drives me bonkers. Goes thru spurts where he only wants to eat one thing. He seems to do better at preschool -- must be peer pressure or something.

On a side note, I ended up running to the grocery store over the noon hour for watermelon. Last night before bed and the last beatment of the night, DS tells us he wants watermelon. We don't have any. Had a full out tantrum "daddy, you get dressed and go to the store and get me watermelon" We explained that it was too late, fibbed that the grocery stores were all closed. This morning on the way to preschool, he tells his dad in a mournful voice "Daddy, I wanted watermelon and you wouldn't get me any".

Why not? WHatever works! Toddlers are notorious for having unconventional eating styles. I found its best not to make a big deal out of it. If jelly sandwiches and cheetos will give him calories and somewhat of a balance- fine. He'll change his mind again. He may not feel like himself with the antibiotics still in his system.

Years ago my cousin was concerned with her youngest son's (no cf) eating habits. So she took him to the doctor/dietician and they took a look at what he was eating. Turns out, despite the repetitiveness of his food choices and his refusal to eat what the rest of the family was eating, for the most part, he was eating a well balanced meal. Peanut butter, yogurt, milk, fruit...

My son refuses to eat green beans, his pasta has to have butter on it -- no sauce, not meatballs. Hates chicken nuggets. But when I sit back an look at what he likes to eats -- fresh carrots & brocolli, peanuts & sunflower nuts, peanut butter, cheese, any kind of fruit, ham patties, pasta, hamburgers... It all seems to balance out. It's just so odd to us sometimes as parents because we LOVE to eat and he's such a picky eater. But I did the same thing. And I remember refusing to TOUCH green beans, which I love today.
