Spam, What is it all about?

I just don't understand SPAM! Anyone know what it's all about?

Seriously, WHY do people or companies or whoever they are, send me or anyone 10-20 completely unrelated emails to me a day? Don't we all get these random spam emails? I'll get ones on penis enlargements, financial whatevers, viagra, etc.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE, seriously? And what in the world do they get out of emailing me about penis enlargements? I never "reply", so what is with it?

Can anyone shed some light on this? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

Thanks in advance. It's one of those life mysteries.

<i>Jade here</i>.....
Sometimes spams are basically e-mail traps. Opening it to read it can be enough to download a small program or set of commands that steal info from your computer whenever your on the net. Resetting your homepage to theirs (<i>called a homepage hijack</i>) or other crazy stuff. Just like a thief who knocks on a door to see if someone is home...tricky but it works<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">. If possible never even open an unknown e-mail...just delete it. If you keep gettin the same ones right click it once and go to <u>deatails</u>.....that will sometimes tell you where it originated from.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Yes, but WHO are these people? Why do they actually spend their time spamming hundreds of people when they (I would imagine) not get any responses? What do they get out of it? I just don't get it.

Most e-mail spamming is done by a computer or account that randomly
sends the spam to all e-mail accounts it comes across.  It
goes through hundreds, basically a-z.  Granted, someone has to
program the computer to do this, but they'd only have to do it
once.  Then the computer does the rest, scanning through
hundreds and thousands of e-mail addresses.<br>
<br>
The best way to stop it is to set up a spam blocker on your e-mail
account.  I have Hotmail, and it gives you the option to allow
everything, filter out suspected spam, or the extreme protection
that I have, that only allows e-mail to go through if the sender is
either in my address book or on my Safe List (addresses that I've
cleared to send me mail, such as Amazon.com).  All other junk
mail goes it a separate folder, that I can dump at any time.
 Very useful!

Thanks guys. I do have all spam (well most of it anyways) go into a separate folder, which is very nice. I'm pretty technically savvy actually, but I just don't understand why it was ever created. The benefit for the computers that started it just seems so pointless.

Aaahhh, oh well. Yes, spam blocker is quite helpful.

Spam (the emails) is as pointless as cockroaches.

be careful who and where you give out your email address too. its best not to put it on a public forums like this. the best way is to private message someone with the details. if you have to sign up to websites that are extremely heavy with the advertising, set up a different email account and use that one so your main one doesnt get filled with junk. also make sure you tixk a box like "do not share my information with anyone" if its available.
