Speech Issues and CF

I was talking with a local mom about her child starting school and it came up in the conversation that both are children are in speech therapy. She wondered if it was a cf thing as she has an older child w/out cf.

She seems to think her child has speech delays due to spending the first few years in the hospital, a couple sinus surgeries and pretty much being sheltered at home for the past 5 years. So that he didn't get an opportunity to interact with others in terms of language development

DS has issues pronouncing a few different sounds, but he's gotten lots of socialization for the past 7 years in a daycare/school environment.

I tend to lean toward there not being a correlation...

Not sure of their overal health, but speech can require more effort and be very tiring with low sats and not much breath. If they're still quite healthy it's probably not related, if not it might be.

Personally having to speak at considerable ("normal") volume or simply for longer durations is very tiring for me. In groups this would typically mean I quickly fall quiet. So in that sense it can be a little bit limiting especially if it happens at young age when having to learn to socialise.

Sometimes kids who are surrounded by adults can speak earlier than those socializing with peers. Speech development does require being around others that speak the language, but not necessarily a peer. Siblings and parents help form the development for the large part of our early speech.

I find this topic very interesting. My son with cf is now in the school districts special education Pre School because of his speech delays. Since starting preschool in September there has been a drastic improvement. It's amazing how much he has benefited from being around his peers. It's been such an explosion! Just thought I chime in! We also did Speech therapy early on, and did not see any results.

I believe his speech delay has much to do with me. I was guilty of doing everything for him. There was no need for him to talk because he was getting what he wanted. Now, that he is in a classroom setting he is learning he has to use words to get things. It's been an great learning experience for all of us. Ohh, and Johnny was our first. Now after having our second baby...It's night and day...The second baby is trying to keep up with EVERYTHING he is doing.
