Spitting out gunk!

I was wondering if anyone knows how to get a 6 year old to spit the gunk out when he coughs it up? He always swallows. Is this still to young? Am I expecting too much?

Just wanted to say... as long as he isn't throwing up from all the mucus, swallowing it doesn't hurt him. I know it seems totally gross, but it's always easier, and sometimes it's the only option. I still do it most of the time. *shrug*

i've also been known to swallow the lung oysters when there isn't anything handy to get rid of it in, yeah, its gross but i'd rather that than run around with the nasty thing in my mouth looking for somewhere to deposit it. i don't know any good way to convience him to spit it out but it's not hurting him i don't think
