Spreading the germs

Hi, as often before my posts regard work/social issues.

There are people with cold in the office, coughing and sneezing (as is normal this part of the year, I suppose). One of my colleauge is quite a joker, and when he sneezes he says "spreading the germs, spreading the germs" as to joke with me. I have posted about this co-worker before, and am now not sure if he knows of my CF or not. I thought he did, but I am not sure, what actually he's aware off. Is he just being ignorant with the germs, or what? I can't believe that he would deliberatly want to contage me, but what should I do about it? Are these germs/bugs really that bad for us? Am I being hyper sensitive to avoid them? Should I tell my colleague to be carefull around me?
What? I'm really confused on this...

Hope for some answers, thanks.

I don't have CF, but my son does and I work with someone who is awaiting a kidney transplant. This past fall with h1n1 going around and lack of vaccine in our area, I got a little nervious because we have a few coworkers who always come to work sick, are always digging in the community food in the break room...

I used a lot of hand sanitizer, disinfectent wipes, avoided touching my hands to my face... There were also several memos that went around regarding not coming to work sick, symptoms of it, so I think that helped this year to a certain extent compared to previous years.

My husband on the other hand went on a business trip and one of the usual sick ones went along WITH flu-like symptoms. Sure enough, my husband called me the night he was supposed to get home, said he was terribly sick and was headed to his parents house to stay.

So I think this year it really helped for me to use H1N1 going around as an excuse because people were more aware and more cautious. And the people who were catching it were younger, HEALTHY individuals like the people I work with.

Does this person actually sneeze on you? Or is he just saying this because he is at work sick?

People come to work sick at my job all the time and I express my displeasure at it, but I also know it's something I need to adjust to because it's not going to change. I work in a public building that has many, many different people coming in and out everyday, which means I have to touch those contaminated elevator buttons, stand in that crowded elevator, etc.

You are NOT being hypersensitive. Catching colds can often lead to secondary lung infections, so it is very important to avoid getting sick as much as possible.

I've found that constantly washing my hands and using hand sanitizer every time I sit down at my desk has really helped, as has keeping up my immune system by getting enough sleep. I also make a serious effort to not touch my hands to my face, although I still sometimes forget and then get annoyed at myself <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">. And I always wash my hands the second I get home.

And I DO try to avoid sick coworkers. If they are sick and at work I have no problem with saying "stay away from me" (although usually in a nicer way) - I don't feel like they need to understand I have CF in this case because, even if I didn't have CF, I still wouldn't want to get sick! I still catch colds, but not as often as I used to.

Hi, thanks for replying.

Well this particular co-worker, says "spreading the germs" directed at me, as to tease me because he know that I don't want the germs. At least that's what I think he means... as it would be funny that I caught his germs? I don't get it.

Well I too wash my hands frequently and use a liquid with alcohol to kill the bacteria.

I think I might have caught some of the germs now, becasue my throath hurts, but it might be allergies, I'm not sure.

Thanks again.
