i have a stabbing, sharp pain in my back really, it's a few inches to the left of my spine, a few inches down from my shoulder, it feels like it's my lungs, and not back muscles. it's worse if i breathe deeply, sit/stand up, reach forward for something, etc... has anyone had this before? any ideas of what it could be?

i tend to wait and not rush to call the docs or go to the er, but my breathing in general is just getting more difficult tonight and now with this pain that has been bothering me for 2 or so hours, im wondering how ill get to sleep. any ideas would be appreciated <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I had a type of pain like that but it was below my rib cage on my right side. I went to the docs and found out I had a massive pneumonia. I would suggest going to the docs and not letting this go. It might be nothing but better to be safe than sorry.

Dear Maggie

My sister does not have CF but she had the same kinda pain when her lung collasped(pneumothorax), I am not trying to scare you but i think that you need to call your doctor or go to the ER , my daughter has CF,she is 9 yrs. old and is actually pretty healthy, anyway about a week ago she was having pain and i thought that it was her lung collasping but i called the pulmonary dr. on call and she said that Kait's lung function was really too good for that to happen and the fact that normally it happens to older people.
I hope that you will call your pulmoary doctor right away and find out what they think. I hope that everything is O.K.

I get that same pain alot! my doctor tells me that it is infection. So, i think that you should go in and at least get checked out. She usually puts me on antibiotics when i get that pain... My pain usually goes from my right upper lobe to my left upper lobe... I usually never get it in my lower lobes which is weird!!! But yah I would say to go and see what your doc says... Its better to be safe than sorry!!!

I get that pretty often too, usually when I'm sick. My doc said it was pleurisy, which is inflammation of the pleural lining of your lungs (the lining around your lungs). He said it usually happens more often when there is an infection present. Mine can be really severe or not too bad and the thing that helps me the most is to wrap a heating pad around the area that hurts. For me it usually lasts for 2 - 4 days. Also, when I lay down, it helps to lay on that side, for some reason it hurts less that way. Go figure! Hope you feel better soon!
