starting to panic

Let me start off with a disclaimer: I have not had an
amnio, so I don't even know for sure if my child has CF.

I have posted a few times, but here are the basics. I have a
3 yo son and I'm 6.5 months pregnant with a girl. We have
found out that my husband and I are both carriers. My son's
sweat test came back normal (9) but sometimes I wonder. Ok,
now here is the panic. Without a CF diagnosis and so far
normal ultrasounds, should I still insist on delivering at a
hospital with a level III NICU? I would have to transfer
OB/GYNs in order to do this and I feel very comfortable with him,
but I'm starting to panic that something might go wrong. I
mean right now everything looks good and aside from the fact that
we are both carriers, there is no reason to assume the baby even
has CF. What do you all think?

Hello that is completely up to you. i did not decide to switch until i had an amnio done and it confirmed that ashton had cf. although starting at about 25 weeks ashton started showing and echogenic bowel so i was glad that i had switched anyways.. th level three nicu is nice to have if you are worried because it might put your mind at ease to know they are there and your baby wont have to leave the hospital that you are at when you cannot leave yet..

Have you asked your doctor -- what if? What if DS is born with an intestinal blockage due to meconium illeus? How far is the closest high level NICU and will they refer/transfer in an emergency.

We were fortunate in that the neonatologist realized they were unable to handle DS surgery and possibly recovery, so he was transferred to a children's hospital 4 hours away (lifeflighted) and surgery was performed the next day. They handled the transfer and the referral. Although we had to jump thru some hoops to find the right person to issue the referral -- I'd contact BCBS and be told it was taken care of, or to have the doctor on call refer, or DS's pediatrician... Urrrgh! Liza

Yes, you should deliver at the hospital with the highest level of NICU. Period. No question about it. I already had a child with cf when our second child was born. There was no question that we would deliver at the best hospital in our city when we decided to get pregnant again. The small chance that we would have a baby both with cf and also meconium illeus was worth making the change in OB's. In the end, we ended up having a baby with both cf and meconium illeus.

Also, please read this link to another discussion on this site about echogenic bowel. It should help answer your question.

if that link doesn't work, search echogenic bowel on this site
