staying cool

As it begins to turn warmer, I have a dilemma. I want to keep the windows closed since I have seasonal allergies, but it gets so hot in our house since we don't have AC. I rent, so I can't make any big changes. I'd use a fan, but I feel like that just kicks up any irritants in the house for me to breathe in. Any suggestions? (Moving is not an option at the immediate moment.)

UGh -- I feel your pain. My son has HORRIBLE spring allergies, he's a total mess and we've already been through a burst of prednisone and are starting a second. We have air conditioning, but I haven't had to use it yet -- thankfully.

We do have this thing that might help you stay cool. Its like a scarf, but its filled with little waterabsorbing pellets that stay cool. You soak it in water and then ring it out and wrap it around your neck. The science of it is that your main arteries pass through your neck and if you keep them cool it cools your body.

I got mine as a gift, but maybe you could search online -- I've seen them at craft shows.

You can get an air conditioner without making major changes. I have horrendous allergies as well and I never open windows. But air conditioners where you don't make major changes are very easy to find.
