Hello everyone,

My daughter Jaycee is 7 with cf. The past three months her PFT's have been in the low 70's, we took her back to the doctor yesterday and they were back in the 90's. However a week and a half ago we went to the doc and they put her on at home IV of Timentin and Tobramycin and her culture from the 4th of January showed Sten Malt. I have no idea how to spell it, therefore cannot find any info on it. If any of you have heard of this can you please let me know where to get info about it. She is also continuing the IV treatment for two more weeks.

Thank you,

Melissa

Hi Melissa, I think you are probably talking about stenotrophomonas maltophilia. I have cultured this. Here is a link to a website with info. I hope this is helpful, if not just try to google it, there is a lot of info.

Hi Melissa,

My daughter is 21 months old. She cultured a trace of Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia through a bronchoscopy culture about six months ago. The doctors say that Steno has not been shown to always cause an increase in symptoms. They say that unlike Pseudomonas it is not an aggressive bug. However, I can tell you that my daughter has since had a two rounds of IV's. One, immediately after the bronchoscopy and the second in Sept. It had to last three weeks instead of two because she just wasn't at her baseline again. Her throat cultures have been negative, so I can't prove that Steno. is really the cause. But, it makes you wonder.

Jaime, did you notice any symptoms when you cultured Steno? Is it very resistent to antibiotics?

In response to Maria, I was first cultured a few years ago and I had not noticed any new symptoms so I was kind of suprised at this new thing I was growing. Alot of doctors have different opinions about treatement, so for me that was the difficult part. If I remember correctly, I tried a few new meds at the time and didnt notice any new response to them. Now Im usually just treated for pseudomonas and staph and we leave the stenotrophomonas untreated.
