Interesting article. Do a lot of clinics choose NOT to treat this? Our local clinic wasn't concerned last year when DS cultured it; however, his primary CF doctor in the City prescribed some additional antibiotics...

My CF doctor doesn't treat my mycobacterium or my steno- ID handles the antibiotic cocktails. We seem to have found the right combination to keep those two, plus my PA and staph a. under control. (Minocycline, zithromax, bactrim, all twice a day; plus inhaled amikacin). I hadn't heard of this bug until I cultured it, and it has proved very difficult to control. It's fully or intermediately resistant to almost everything, it's a very lucky break that it responds to the minocycline.

It is scary..I culture that one too and it is so resistant. Once in awhile, minocycline works for it but it seems to do so in cycles. What I mean is that I will go in for an exacerbation, be treated with a cocktail of IV's an minocycline if the steno happens to be sensitive to it, but with the next exacerbation, the steno would be resistant to the minocycline. My cepacia behaves like this too with other antibiotics as well. One time it will be sensitive to Zosyn, the next time not and so on. I usually can predict what the bugs will be sensitive to by looking at the previous admission. Jenn
