Surrogacy doesn't look like an option...

As you may know, my lung function is currently borderline for me to get pregnant. Basically my consultant has said he feels he could get me through a pregnancy ok but its at the lower end of acceptable so the risks are increased.

I decided to look into whether surrogacy might be an option this week and have contacted the two main surrogacy organisations in the UK, to ask what type of costs would be involved for "host" surrogacy (involving IVF so the baby would be genetically ours).

I don't know how surrogacy works in the US but here its very complicated. You are not allowed to pay for a surrogate, you can only pay them "expenses" to ensure they are not out of pocket for what they are doing for you.

Anyway, the organisation replied today and guess what they said?!

"An approximate cost of host surrogacy is £35,000 ($53,000). This includes clinic and surrogate expenses. However those costs could rise if you have a number of attempts."

They also said they have 30 couples currently waiting to be matched with surrogates for host surrogacy but currently have no surrogates wanting to be matched to parents!!!

So I don't think this option is looking like it's even worth following up! Has anyone else succcesfully gone down this route?

Yes, surrogacy is expensive here in the U.S. too. Usually, it is between $50,000 to $60,000!!!

Jake and I NEVER gave surrogacy a serious consideration due to the money involved. Unless one has a sister who is willing to help, it's not worth it...I have a sister, but she has CF too + diabetes. Our lung functions are the same despite our 3 year age difference.

Even still, I'm not sure he would have done it anyway. He doesn't even believe in IUI yet alone surrogacy.

Edited to Add: I know that a couple other CF'ers thought about surrogacy, but I think only two may have actually tried it...Kristen (maybe)...Peds (maybe)...If memory servers me...It didn't work so they are back to trying themselves again...I don't know of a successful surrogacy story...

If by Kristen you mean me, I have not looked into the surrogacy route

And, WOW, I can't believe how expensive it is...although I guess it makes sense if you have to pay for IVF, plus all of the medical costs. I'm sorry that route isn't looking good for you Tombilboo.

Ahhhhhhh...

My bad...For some reason, I thought you had either tried or looked into surrogacy. Thanks for correcting me.
