Talk to me

So this year has been a really rough year for me. I got preggo in jun 07. From then until Jan 09, I was only hospitalized 4 times (which for me is awesome). I was also only on a few meds. Lots of research on chemicals made me want to get down to as little as possible. This left in singular, zithro, albuteral, adeks, creon 20, rhinocort nose spray. I was doing GREAT. My weight was also staying around 120 (I find this to be VERY important).

Well at the end of 08 we found one of my cultures with the that avium mycro bacteria. My doc immediately took me off of zithromax.

At the beginning of 09 my husband return from a year in Iraq...with him he brought what I call the "iraqi flu". He was sick for 2 weeks, lost 10 lbs, it was BAD. Of course I just HAD to catch it.

I lost 15 lbs, was put on IV's and everything. Since then I can NOT get my health back to a good spot. I've been on IV's 3 times this year alone. And more or less on cipro non stop in between. I've also been having ALOT of issues with my asthma. We tried advair but its just not working.

So here I am in the hospital for 3 weeks, missing alot in my life right now and I've decided my health needs to take the for front (us mommas are bad for leaving ourselves last).

My doc and I have added quit a bit of new meds to the routine, but so far in 1 weeks time my FEV1 has went up 21%. So I wanted to talk about my regiment a little, and pull ideas on maybe supplements and other things.

Inhaled Meds:

Albuteral 2x's daily
Hypertonic 7% 2 x's daily
Pulmozyme 1x daily (I'm on it twice during my hospital stay)
Symbicort (I will be starting this tomorrow, info? results?)

Pills:

Crean 20 (4-6 with meals/snacks)
Sinulgar 1x daily
Source Cf vitamins 2x's daily

Nasal:

Rhinocort 2x's daily
Saline Spray - often as needed

During my hospital stay I am on:

prednisone (currently weaning down from 40mg)
nafcilin(every 4 hours)
tobramycin(every 8 hours)
aztrenam (every 8 hours)
vitamin K (for bleeding)

I am doing my vest 2 times daily for 30 minutes. I am walking for 15 minutes a day as well. My current FEV1 is 52%.

I have heard some people mention probiotics -I would LOVE some info. I eat yogart does that do the same thing? I have also heard of other antiinflamatory supplements. I believe most of my issues are due to asthma, so any info there would be great. I also want to add that I am getting a mickey button monday morning so that I can get my weight back up t over 120lbs. I think a higher weight REALLY helps me stay healthy.

Ya'll really know your stuff and quite a few of you have had really promising results. I am going to do whatever it takes to get my lung function back up to atleast 70%. (cuz I want another baby and my husband said I can't have one till it is lol)

I am sure other people will have more comprehensive input.

Congrats on getting your FEV1 up by so much so far.

My two cents are:

NeilMed sinus wash 2x a day instead of or in addition to your spray. I think it has helped me a lot.

I have had a great experience with Symbicort. A couple times when my asthma has really acted up, I have discovered that I was using an empty inhaler. I figure this is proof that it makes a difference for me. What I mean is that I would see the inhaler getting down toward zero on the counter. Then I would forget for like a week until one day I looked at the inhaler and realized that it had been days since I actual got anything out of it. And suddenly I would have an explanation for why I had been feeling so itchy chested and tight.

A few things to add:

1. Have you been allergy tested? I may have already asked you this but I can't remember. If not, it's time to get skin tested for allergies. Add a HEPA filter in your bedroom and room you do meds in, etc etc etc (more allergy details on my blog)

2. Add Allegra (it's generic so it's cheap) even if you don't have allergies. Some literature points to it being helpful even if you don't have allergies (Read the article on "Anti-histamines even when you don't have allergies" on my blog http://noexcusesnoexcuses.blog...search/label/Allergies )

3. Fizzy NAC. Great way to reduce the viscosity of your mucus making it easier to cough up and reducing inflammation (Check out the Phase II trial at http://noexcusesnoexcuses.blogspot.com/search/label/NAC )

4. I'd switch your nose spray - Rhinocort is by far the weakest of all nose sprays. Omnaris, Veramyst and Nasacort AQ are much better choices.

5. Add cromolyn Sodium to your neb routine. I never knew why I used it, but my ped put me on it when I was very young. Then I went to visit Warwick and I saw he has every single one of his patients on it. It's generic so it's cheap - it's a mast cell stabalizer than can reduce inflammation in the lungs

6. What strength of Advair? Have you tried Flovent?

7. Do you exercise other than the walking? You need to ask your doc how high you can get your heart rate up and get it up there for 30 minutes 3x a week. That will make a big difference in your immune system, reducing inflammation, strengthening your bones, and preveting further lung decline

8. Are you on anything chronically for you myco?

9. Have you tried upping your Vest to 3-4x a day?

Take care

Take care

1. I honestly don't think I've ever been allergy tested. There isn't alot that bothers me. I can't be outside on grass cutting days, and the cat can't be in my face at night, and im can't be near horses -but other than that...I'll ask my doc while I'm in here though.

2. Allegra - really? I was on it, zyrtec, clartin -they never seemed to do anything for me. But I have been thinking I need SOMETHING - however I am pretty sure I can't take it while nursing.

3. NAC? How can I get it if its only in clinical trail?

4. Rhinocort is actually one spray that really works for me.

5. cromolyn Sodium - Ill ask my doc about it today - I have NO CLUE what it is.

6.I have tried BOTH strengths of advair, and of flovent. Neither have worked at all

7. I asked PT when I went for my walking and they said 160..Ill get the details though. Right now I am only walking b/c its all I've physically been able to do. When I get home though my goal is to work my way to running 2 miles. (I almost had a mile before I got sick).

8. She is currently NOT treating the myco b/c I've only cultured it once.

9. Well to be TOTALLY honest bumping the vest to 2 x's a day is a bump up. I am so sore right now but my body is getting used to it.
