Hi there, Let me 1st tell each of you thank you for all your advise you have given me in the last couple months. We are doing much better! We met with the doctors that perform PGD, and our future looks brighter. I just have to get my BMI way down...So, I have made up my mind that if my son has to fight every day to fight CF...I can fight to get my weight at healthy number....To give him brothers and sisters....Well, I need some tips or info on Great Strides? Did each of you do it the first year or wait? Do you only ask for support from family, friends, co-workers, or can you reach out to large companies? Thanks for anytips you might have.

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

My dd was diagnosed at 5 months right after the Great Strides in our area. So I had just about a year into the diagnosis before we did our first walk. This year will be our second.

Anyway you can get sponsors is great. My focus was on recruiting people to walk...we had 6 teams in addition to our own across the country walking for my daughter. Our team raised $3000 and the other teams raised a little less, but still it was a nice contribution in my opinion. I put together a video and then did a massive e-mail campaign to everyone I knew. The people that donated really surprised me and touch my heart.

When you register your team, the CFF will send you a big packet. You could try to get corporate sponsors for your team. You could convince some local stores to sell those small sneakers or roses at the register for $1 or $5 a piece (you know the kind where they write their name on them, and the store hangs all of them up) and all the money will go for your teams contribution. Other people on her have held bigger galas and fundraising nights, but you don't have to do it all the first year.

Honestly, it was a wonderful and uplifting experience for me. I look forward to increasing my goal every year and gaining insight from the others on the board, as I know there are those around here that have raised funds that make our $3000 look small by comparison.
