teen travel trips

Has anyone gone on an organized teen trip -- you know the kind kids go on for 4-6 weeks over the summer? If so, how did you manage your medication and therapy? I'd like my teenage daughter to be able to go on a trip next summer, like her older sister did, but I don't know how she'd manage to keep her pulmozyme refrigerated, use her nebulizer, keep her equipment clean, etc, as they move from place to place. Thanks!

Hey, I went on a trip, kinda like that when I was in the 7th grade. Our class took a ten day field trip to Crete, my dad was stationed in Germany at the time, which is why we had such a lavish field trip. Anyways, I know its not as long as a 4-6 week trip, but I was able to go and do all my treatments and everything. I carried all of my medicine, and my teachers and chaperones knew about my CF, we DID have a fridgerator in our room, so I was able to keep my Pulmozyme or anything that had to stay cold in there. I did however take a field trip to Amsterdam the next yr, and we stayed in a youth hostel, there, they were able to keep it in a fridge behind the front desk and I would just ask for it when I needed to do my treatment. I kept it in a little cooler, so it was all kept together.
I think that as long as the places where your daughter would be staying have electricity, then there shouldnt really be a problem. Im sure talking to the people in charge of it who are going with her can help. To me, its a once in a lifetime chance to take trips like that, and nothing should be able to keep her from enjoying it. I know I loved all my trips I was able to go on!

I go to Israel every couple of years for about a month, I'm probably going again in June. Last time I went I was in my 'on month' of Tobi. I took a little fabric cooler with icepacks (buy the blue icepacks from wal-mart, they stay frozen for FAR longer than normal ice packs) and asked the stewardesses to put the meds in the fridge (it's like a 12 hour flight). Then most youth hostels have a fridge SOMEWHERE, so I would just ask the front desk. Turned out my neb didn't work with my power converter over there, so I just skipped that month of Tobi, when I told my doctors when I came home they didn't seem to worried.
THIS year, I've started my Tobi month a little late so I can time is just right so my trip falls in my 'off month'. I talked to my doctors and they didn't see much of a problem with me just holding off on my other nebs while I'm there, so I'm not going to take my neb at all (that's a HUGE load off).

Talk to your doctors about it, it could be that she's healthy enough that it's just not worth the trouble to try to do nebs while there, ofcourse that is between you and your doctors, but the climate in Israel always makes me SO healthy, that as long as I do my flutter twice a day (and my oral meds ofcourse) I know I'll be fine for the short weeks I'll be gone.
Also I would make sure she has Bactrum or some sort of antibiotic whole she's there, JUST incase she gets an infection while she's there. Again, talk to your doctor about it, they can get you some "just in case" meds.

Planning ahead like you are is the key. It's good that you are showing her to not let her having CF hold her back. As long as she is healthy enough to go, she should. It's a good experience and one she will remember forever, not to mention the chance for her to prove she can do stuff and be reliable on her own.

Check to see that her nebulizer is duel voltage capable. If it is then all you/she needs is a plug converter. Knowing which country she is going to will help. If you don't know if her machine is duel check with the manufacturer. It should actually say in your owner's manual but not everyone keeps those. And it should be on the machine itself on the bottom. If it is not then look into purchasing one that is. You don't want to use a transformer, they are too big and heavy. The proper type to convert with full power are.

I hope it all works out so she can go have the time of her life.

Ooops, I forgot to mention cpt. Carrying a mechanical percussor will be a pain, not to mention power conversion. Check to see if she can use a pep and or a flutter while gone. Perhaps maybe some manual percussion as well.
