tell me about pulmozyme

As you probably know, I don't do many meds - besides enzymes, advair and albuterol inhalers and hs (but I am not too disciplined on the neb). However, I think it's time to gewt a wee bit more aggressive in my treatments. I am not getting any younger!! So what is pulmozyme? What does it do for you? How often do you need to use it? If you are a horribly disciplined nebber, does it matter if you miss a treatment here and there? Are there any side effects? Do you find it helpful? What do I need to know?? thanks in advance!

This is the way I describe Pulmozyme. Its like an enzyme for the mucous. You breath it in & it helps break up the mucous (much like our enzymes for digestion does on the food) making it easier to move around & get up. I use my once a day. I would love to use it twice daily, but due to my history of hemoptysis my doctor wont even think of it at this point. I love the pulmozyme. I can feel a difference, but after using it for a bit I didnt think it was doing anything so I stopped. After a few days of NOT using it I felt how hard it was to get that junk up so I started again. Now I also have used HS which I also loved because it helped me cough to get it up, but it was "harsher" with my airways becoming closed so that is on hold for now. When I was put on HS I ?? why both Pulmozyme & HS should be used & I was told.......HS helps to wet things making it easier to move it up, but Pulmozyme actually breaks it up making it thinner. Tho they have similiar functions/assets they still have distinctive benefits. Pulmozyme is very expensive so some dont/cant use it due to cost!

DS has been on pulmozyme for about a year. I can't notice a difference in his case, but it's being used more as a preventative for him. His doctor indicated that some of his patients can't use it because they've gotten hoarse, but haven't noticed that being the case with ds. He gets his pulmozyme after his last cpt treatment & nebs. Takes about 5-8 minutes nebulized using the pulmoaide (devilbiss) compressor)

It's my understanding too that genetech has a program similar to tobi to help individuals with high copays, etc.

I use pulmozyme as well and do notice that it helps to thin my
mucus.  I currently do it once a day (occasionally miss a
day), and feel that it has helped in the overall picture of things.

I was on pulmozyme from the time it came out untill about 4 years ago, I think it worked great, if I missed one day I could tell, but one of the side effects is hemoptysis and four years ago I had major hemoptysis and everytime I tried Pulmozyme (and Tobi) I would start having hemoptysis again. I too am on the hypertonic saline and like that a lot.

I use it once a day also. And if i miss a dose i do sometimes notice it because the mucus isnt as easy to get out. Its one of those medicines that once you try it , you may not want to be without it.

I just started taking Pulmozyme about 3 weeks ago, and boy do I notice a difference. I'm coughing up more then I've ever coughed up before. I take mine once a day as well. For those that take it once a day, what time of the day do you take it?
