Testing for CF gene

I was wondering if anyone has had testing for their adult children to see if they are carriers of the CF gene? I want my 23 yr. old to be tested to see if she is a carrier but I'm not sure if that is a covered expense by her insurance company. If not does anyone know what the approximate cost would be? I just think it's important for her to know especially when she starts planning to have children.

some of my kids were tested to see if they were carriers or had cf themselves. our insurance paid for it. my oldest was pregnant and her docs ran standard tests (nowadays) and noted she showed up w/ the gene and so then tested the father of the baby early in the pregnancy. turns out my oldest was only a carrier and he wasn't so babies turned out fine. we had tricare and i think my oldest had blue cross.

Hi Tracy,
A) CF is in siblings. As you know there are many of us (me included) with chronic respiratory symptoms but never consider it to be CF related. 2 weeks ago I,was at Cornell-Weill in NYC for my recurring sinus infection check up which always runs to my lungs and recurring infections there too. That visit we got to talking about CF and chronic infections. Startling enough, he and other colleagues are studying CFTR mutations in non CF patients with chronic respiratory and will be publishing a paper revealing CFTR genes are prevalent in non CF patients. No, he didn't suggest testing me (68), but seems to be likely. Using that tactic, if your other adult children have chronic respiratory, you may find insurance will pay because prevention is cheaper.
Great question.
